This was a nice place to visit while roaming the North Carolina countryside. Very informative exhibits in what was the old catawba county courthouse. Best part of it all the entrance fee was 0.00.

This is a small museum however it is operated in a professional manner. Accurate and useful information about Catawba County is readily available to visitors. School field trips are a regular occurrence. I recommend a visit to any history buff.

Every time I have visited I've had a great experience. People are helpful and great to work with. I've purchased many of the books for my own research and the Yoder map I bought has been a wonderful help in locating the many areas my multiple family lines have lived in. I'm dating myself but when I was a kid this was the courthouse!

There is so much to see for every age group. For some of us the history can be remembered when it was a current event. There are books for browsing as well as the exhibits. Every one should visit

Love museums, and even better that they are in old buildings. This place is in a 1924 courthouse and has lots of cool displays. I love that you can visit the commissioners floor and it s very clean. They have a small kids room with dress up items, etc. To top it all off, the admission is free.

The best county history museum in either of the Carolinas... hands down. Rare, authentic, and accurate displays are the norm, all presented in unique and interesting ways. Only posted five stars because there were not ten! Top notch!!

Becoming Part of Newton's History

Becoming Part of Newton's History

During our exploration trip accross Catawba County (approx. 50 mi NW from our base in Charlotte) we decided to check out the area's History Museum.
A sweet lady, Jessica, welcomed us and gave us some instructios on how to get the most out of our self-guided tour of the museum that artfully displays its exhibits in the setting of Catawba County's 1924 Courthouse in downtown Newton.
What we and Herold Little (our company mascot) saw and experienced can best be described through the photos attached so you may want to enjoy these before you come to visit Newton yourself!
We at PHIL'S WORLD TRAVEL suggest all our customers to invest some hours to visit Newton and its impressive vicinity when in the area. You'll love it. And its lovely residents as well!

Diamond in the rough. Great museum with so much for the size. From preserved room to box car derby vehicle. A jail and medical display. Racecar, courthouse. Even a display of camera's. Went with my brother and had a great time. Quiet place to go. Will be going again.

The Catawba County Historical Association is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to preserving the rich history of Catawba County for over 80 years. The association was founded in 1939 by a group of passionate individuals who recognized the importance of preserving the objects, stories, and places that matter most to Catawbans.

It operates several historic sites throughout the county including Murray's Mill Historic District which features an early 20th-century gristmill as well as several other historic buildings.

Another popular attraction operated by the association is The Harper House/Hickory History Center which offers visitors a glimpse into life during Civil War times with its period furnishings and exhibits on Hickory’s early industrial development.

The organization also hosts regular events such as lectures, tours, workshops, festivals throughout each year which provide opportunities for people interested in learning more about local history or just having fun with family or friends while exploring our area’s past!
