Campaign for National Parks: Protecting and Promoting England and Wales' Natural Treasures
Campaign for National Parks is a national charity that is dedicated to protecting and promoting all of the National Parks in England and Wales. As the only charity that campaigns exclusively for these natural treasures, Campaign for National Parks has been instrumental in ensuring that these areas remain protected, accessible, and enjoyed by generations to come.
The organization was founded in 1936 as the Council for the Preservation of Rural England (CPRE), which later became known as Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE). In 1949, CPRE established a separate division called the Council for National Parks (CNP) with a specific focus on protecting designated national parks. In 1997, CNP became an independent charity under its current name - Campaign for National Parks.
Today, Campaign for National Parks continues to work tirelessly towards its mission of protecting and promoting all of England and Wales' national parks. The organization's work is guided by three core objectives:
1. To protect the beauty, diversity, wildlife, cultural heritage, tranquility and recreational opportunities of all English & Welsh national parks.
2. To promote understanding & enjoyment of their special qualities by residents & visitors alike.
3. To ensure that they are valued & supported by everyone who has influence over their future.
To achieve these objectives, Campaign for National Parks engages in various activities such as lobbying government bodies on issues affecting national parks; working with local communities to promote sustainable tourism; conducting research on issues affecting national parks; providing educational resources about national parks; organizing events such as guided walks; among others.
One key area where Campaign for National Parks has made significant progress is in advocating against inappropriate development within or near designated areas. The organization believes that any development within or near a park should be carefully considered so as not to compromise its special qualities or detract from visitors' experience.
Another area where Campaign for National Parks has been active is in promoting sustainable tourism. The organization recognizes that tourism can have both positive and negative impacts on national parks, and as such, it advocates for responsible tourism practices that minimize negative impacts while maximizing the benefits to local communities.
Campaign for National Parks also works to promote public understanding and appreciation of national parks. The organization believes that by educating people about the special qualities of these areas, they will be more likely to support their protection and preservation.
In addition to its advocacy work, Campaign for National Parks also provides a range of resources for visitors to national parks. These include maps, guides, educational materials, and information on events happening within or near the parks.
Overall, Campaign for National Parks is an essential organization in protecting England and Wales' natural treasures. Its work ensures that these areas remain accessible and enjoyed by generations to come while promoting sustainable development practices that protect their unique qualities.
