Need a high quality sugar rush? THis is the place. Pick a cupcake, pick a French butter cream frosting and it is all yours to enjoy or go for one of the popular standard flavor combos! They offer classes in cupcake baking as well!
Really great customer service and very patient with our large group.. banana cake with maple something (haha) is the way to go!
Did somebody say cupcakes? Yes? Good.
Because seriously, Butter Lane is awesome. Whenever I'm in the east village, I stop at this place. I haven't been in a while, but man, do I want to go back. Their cupcakes are a good size( not too big) and you can customize it yourself. My two faves are maple frosting/ vanilla cake and the strawberry frosting/ chocolate cake. The frosting wasn't piled on too thick, like at Crumbs either. They even have frosting shots for those who want to fulfill just a bit of a sugar rush.
The place is nice, clean, and inviting. The staff is friendly too. They get an A in my book!
Through How About We, I took an icing class, and the person who instructd us was very knowledgeable and friendy. It was definitely romantic.
I don't usually like cupcakes, but boy oh boy it was DELICIOUS! I tried the chocolat base cupcake with coconut cream: wow, super delicious! Not to much cream, which I appreciate a lot!
Eh I've had a better cupcake. Not worth $6.50 for 2 cupcakes. They were a little more dense than I like cupcakes to be. I prefer fluffy and moist. I had chocolate and cream cheese icing. I didn't finish it.
Everything is fresh I bought my daughter cake from here they never did appointed organic ingredients
If you live in Stuy Town too, they have a deal of Tuesdays where you can get 2 cupcakes for the price of 1. DELICIOUS
Very Kind service, Friendly willing to make any cupcake fresh! Great selection.
Best banana pudding in Southern California. I've had different varieties and enjoy all of them.

We had heard how good butter lane was and it didn't disappoint. I had the vanilla cream cheese and my friend had chocolate salted caramel. We sat outside on a cute little bench delighting in these tasty treats and watching the world go by (which in the east village is the thing to do) when the owner and baker came out. His love for his work and delight at our delight at his cupcakes led him to insist on us trying one more on him. Thanks Butter Lane, we love you!
Great cupcakes, super tasty. 2 for 1 Sale regularly. There are also cupcake making classes,
Absolutely terrible customer service. The cupcakes were supposed to come with real foods on top. when I ask for the fruits the person at the register said that they don't put the fruits because it's going to go bad but I told him I was going to eat it now but he still didn't give us the fruits. Very basic tasting cupcakes, nothing to be excited about. I do like the interior design.
Butter Lane features a number of fruity buttercream icings that I love, including raspberry, lemon and blueberry. Besides its scrumptious homemade cupcake offerings, the bakery also enables customers to compose their own cupcakes by choosing their cake and icing options.
Butter Lane has ramped up on community offerings since its opening in 2008. It offers cupcake baking classes, maintains an active social media presence on Twitter, Facebook, Yelp and Tumblr, and runs specials on Groupon, LivingSocial and Foursquare.
Took a wonderful cupcake making class here. Diana was so encouraging and fun and the cupcakes were divine. This place is great!
They make beautiful custom cakes and cupcakes! Irene is the best
The Maple Pecan on Banana Cake blew my mind. One of the more, if not the most, delicious cupcakes I've ever had. The frosting was excellent and the actual cupcake was just the right consistency and flavor strength. Plus, a check in on foursquare gets you a 3 for 2 deal!
My favorite Manhattan cupcake spot, hands down. As much as possible, they avoid overly processed ingredients. As a base, you get your choice of vanilla, chocolate, or banana bread. And then, you just choose your icing from their unique and tasty favorites. My current favorite is espresso icing on a chocolate base. Don't miss the Elvis either - banana base with my favorite peanut butter icing. Mmmm! Their icing shots are amazing - topped by a corresponding accent and not just straight icing alone. They also have cupcake classes - sometimes paired with alcohol :-O Sign up for their newsletter. It's worth the added email!!
We had an intimate birthday party here for my 11-year old daughter and 8 of her camp buddies and cousins. Diana and the staff at Butter Lane were friendly and helpful from the first inquiry I made early in the fall, until we hugged and said good bye at the party in November. They walked everyone through cupcake baking and decorating at their 3 beautifully and efficiently laid out work stations. The process was fun and engaging for the kids and the 3 adults who helped, and the results were buttery, finger-licking scrumptious. Each guest took home NINE yummy cupcakes, and we the hosts were give several dozen of the extras, and some they had professionally baked and decorated too. We brought some aprons as party favors for our guests, and the Butter Lane staff assembled individual gift bags for our guests, using our aprons, their materials, and our fancy stickers. They also allowed us to use their space to host a casual pizza lunch before the cupcake baking. Their pricing was very fair and they made it such a special day for my daughter! Thank you Butter Lane!!!
Lots of choices. Got piece of German chocolate cake and a piece of chocolate cake with meringue icing. Both very good. The only complaint I would make is the people were not very helpful or nice. Need to increase the customer service. A smile and kind word would help.
This review is a couple years late... but it's better than never! This is one of my favorite cupcake places!!! What was even better was the baking class deal my gfs and I got on groupon. In the class itself, there was about 10-15 of us, separate into 3 groups. We got an intro about the store, made 3 different cakes, made 3 different frostings, frosted the cakes ourselves, and got to take home 4-8 cupcakes each!!! The staff was super friendly and was nice enough to take pictures throughout the event. They even emailed us the receipes afterwards!!! Needless to say, I'm way overdue in taking another class with them. It was a lot of fun and would be perfect as a gift for a date night, girl's night out, or private party. Happy baking and eating!! :D
We love that you can mix and match your cake and icing flavors! Pretty good customer service as well. Sadly, the cupcakes were a little dry.
What a great experience. I tried the pistachio cupcake and it was devine.
Took the cupcake making class with Lee. He had amazing knowledge, jokes and charisma. We carried home gorgeous delicious cupcakes. The excellent customer service has made loyal patrons of us!
We went there for my birthday expecting to learn how to cook cupcakes perfectly !
First disappointment : we were 4 per station .... a little overcrowded to bake honestly. You end up not doing much...
Everything was pre prepared : so we ended up most of the time just putting ingredients in a bowl and mix them.
Explanations were clear and we understood how to bake but did not feel really like baking.
Sabrina who was teaching us was really direct and sometimes would do things for us so that we can see how to do .. but we would have preferred doing ourselves even if it would have not been perfect.
What a surprise as well when we were told to leave for 20 minutes while cupcakes are in the oven... it was really pricey so you would expect a better service than that : make a game, explain more about baking, offer a coffee... no instead we were told to leave and come back 20 mins later !!!
The best part was the frosting : it was when we felt like doing the most and you could do your own way !!!
So overall : we were disappointed by the baking class
But positive side : all ingredients were very high quality , and cupcakes were delicious !
We left with like 20 cupcakes , so that was also good but not the experience we were looking for
Best cupcake I've ever had. I ate the banana cupcake with sea Salt caramel icing. Yuhummm!
My SIL got her wedding catered by Butterlane. They were standard cupcakes, but nothing spectacular. I wouldn't go out of my way to buy them. Only good thing is that they let you choose the cake & the type of frosting for your cake, so you're not stuck w/ whatever they make.
Cute little cupcake shop!
Loved that you can choose the cake first and then the frosting-so many delicious options.
Nothing crazy fancy but very solid and fresh.
Will definitely go back for more.
Did a baking class here. Since I'm a pastry chef I'm always use to scraping down the bowl to help incorporate everything. The girl kept getting mad about it (she is very sassy). It's hard to leave stuff when you should incorporate it all. Not just waiting till the end. Since the buttercream still had lumps following it her way. Then the cupcakes we're still warm and the buttercream was melting. The next day the cupcakes looked disgusting and didn't look edible just melted and looked like a mess. Waste of money in my eyes. Would I do this class again if you ask. No I wouldn't.
Butter Lane offers cooking classes as holiday and birthday gifts. I joined one last holiday season and had a blast. Best (and worst for the diet) part... you get to bring home the dozens of cupcakes you make.
This is one of my favorite cupcakeries in the city, which is saying something as I make it a point to visit every one I can find. They have a great mix and match method, which allows you to pick your cake (3 choices I believe: french vanilla, chocolate, and banana) and then pick from a long list of different frosting types.
They take cards, which is AWESOME because I never have cash. The service has always been great, as the workers are attentive and upbeat and seem to really enjoy their craft. Having lived in the area, I'm also partial to the neighborhood, and think it's a great place to walk around---or better yet to grab dinner or drinks in the East Village and followup with a cupcake at Butter Ln.
Never had a bad experience here :)
The smells that greet you upon entering into the building are wonderful! It's better than any perfume you could ever hope to find. The cupcakes themselves are super moist and sweet.
My husband and I had to cancel a trip to NY for a friend's 40th birthday so as a surprise I purchased cupcakes for my friend from Butter Lane - but they were never delivered. I called to find out what happened and the employee who picked up the phone had no idea what was going on. The manager briefly apologized and said they would send the cupcakes out (a day late). There was no offer of compensation for the delivery charge or anything else. VERY DISAPPOINTING. I would NEVER purchase anything from this bakery again. When you spend $60 on cupcakes they should at least be delivered.
-----
Update: I received an email from Butter Lane apologizing for the mistake and refunding the full amount of my order. I appreciated the professionalism.
Cute East Village cupcake shop. Sadly, it does not deliver. I keep trying to like them and each time I want to spit out their cupcakes. Once I got a banana cupcake that was so dry it was almost hard like a rock. This is a bakery that stays open late. I would think they'd sell some fresh products but the cakes get stale past a certain hour. The French Vanilla icing was not fluffy. Again, stale. Overall the chocolate cupcake with mint icing and plan vanilla with blueberry icing were the best tasting. I'd pass and go to Sprinkles uptown, or even Chikalicious around the corner.
Very good cupcakes. The pity is that the place is very small and you cannot eat there, but luckily, Tompkins Square Park is very close to enjoy them in good weather.
Best cupcakes in the city, fluffy cake and deliciously buttery
I was happy to take a class of cupcake in November 2013. Short and sweet evening.
Came here with my sister for the cupcake class which we purchased on groupon. $45 for 2 hours. The space is pretty small but clean. Everything was measured out ahead of time for us so the class was more learning the steps of the recipe and some explanation of the importance of certain steps. It was fun and we ended up going home with 9 cupcakes which was great. Definitely a fun group activity and not too pricey
Yummy cup cakes that you can basically get made to order. They also have cooking classes.
Visited masterclass of cupcake making, 12 people at a time, you work in group of four, will not do everything by your own, and even there is nothing special to do or learn, just put everything in definite order into mixer. The only advantage for those who like their cupcakes (I don t) that you will bring a box of 9 home with you.
They had lovely cupcake making classes on groupon. Great experience.
Came here for the cupcake 101 course. It was for a fun night out in the city with a group of friends and family. The size of the store was a bit small for the amount of people/workspace in the class, but I can overlook that and not base the review on that criteria.
My grip was the attitude of the instructor, from the beginning his inability to smile and be welcoming made me hesitate how this experience would play out. He made the class feel like a boot camp with his drill sergeant mentality. It was very off putting and it continued throughout the night.
My group had mentioned to me the bad attitude of the older gentleman at the register that was being very rude and condescending to the other employees. I didn't personally witness this but it only added fuel to the fire. Overall it seemed like the participants in the class were a bother to the business. It was a terrible vibe and I wouldn't do it again with the same staff, even if it was free.
On the plus side, the syllabus of the class was interesting as we made several varieties of cake and frosting and we were able to take home more cupcakes than originally stated. The cupcakes did taste really good too. Luckily we had a lot more planned that night and this experience became a distant, but not forgotten memory.
Dry cupcakes , poor tasting icing. you can tell these cupcakes were designed by older people.
Class was fantastic and the cupcakes were wonderful. Can't wait to go back!
Blue bell ice cream at butter lane! My life is complete.
I absolutely love this place and their rich buttery buttercream. They have a choices of various bases such as vanilla, chocolate and banana bread that you can top with a number of conventional and seasonal buttercreams. I appreciate that they have fruity flavors such as blueberry on banana to be able to convince my non sweet toothy friends to accompany me so I can get my sea salt chocolate.
The moment you walk in you instantly feel like you stepped into a blown up version of someone's kitchen with the pastry chefs frosting the homemade cupcakes in front of you and interacting with each other like family. The cupcake itself was moist and the frosting a we're not too sweet. We enjoyed anything with a chocolate base.
This is the best cupcake shop in New York City. They bake everything fresh daily. They have three cupcake bases: vanilla, chocolate and banana and ton of frosting flavors. The cake just perfect and I love the chocolate cake the most. I love their Cream cheese and pistachio icing... sosososos great. I can not control myself to think about it and my mouth is watering now....
Great cupcakes! The raspberry chocolate ones are super tasty. There are also cupcake making classes, but they seem to be booked for months in advance =(
Wow, what an incredible place to go for your birthday celebration. My birthday was on 6/22 and I saw a baking class offer on groupon for Butter Lane. We reserved on groupon but did not know we had to call the bakery to confirm space for your party. We called and the gentleman who took the call put me on hold for a brief moment came back and said he would be able to accommodate us (party of 6). I was so excited and happy I got a chance to celebrate at Butter Lane. Thanks to teacher and staff. Yummy, excellent cupcakes.
Went in but cashier was so trashy and rude and dismissive. Sorry to bother her as she was way more concerned about talking to her co-worker and an older gentleman who seemed like the owner. She has NO business working with the public. Horrible attitude. Made me regret walking in there bc I was just annoying her by making a purchase. WAY better cupcake places. Regret spending the $15 but I was going to a gathering and needed a 4-pack. Never will return, why should I?
All favors of cupcake here r so delicious and caramel is my favorite!!!!!! I can eat 10 and more one time. I've told my all friends who like cupcakes about this shop and I think it is the best choice at East village. But just a little bit far from my home. Lol
Took the cupcake making class with Lee. He had amazing knowledge, jokes and charisma. We carried home gorgeous delicious cupcakes. The excellent customer service has made loyal patrons of us!
It tastes good, but it's not even close to Sweet! in Orlando. Cakes a little dry, and icing is a bit too sweet to balance well. Honey cinnamon was a good idea though - seems weird at first, but the honey really makes it.
they have reasonable coffee if you, like me, hate cupcakes, and are being dragged along.
Butter Lane is by far one of my favorite cupcake spots. They're small yet offer quite a variety of flavors both classic and fun! I came on my birthday and they honored me with a FREE cupcake which was such a special treat. Their cupcakes are moist, flavorful and of course... buttery! And a good frosting to cake ratio. The staff was also very accommodating and friendly which always impacts the experience.
I hear they do classes, which is next on my bucket list!
I passed by this cupcake shop on my way to have my morning coffee and stopped on the way back to my nephew's apartment.
When I looked it up, I was really curious what an icing shot was which was free with a Yelp check-in.
There were so many variety of cupcakes that I really did have to have one. I chose the chocolate cupcake topped with strawberry buttercream. Both the cupcake and the icing was not overly sweet at all. Yummilicious!
Their best seller is the salted caramel with chocolate so I got that for the icing shot. Really good!
For those who live in the city, they offer baking classes where they also share the recipe. Love that they do not add food coloring to their icing. All natural from the fruit!
Great place but $12 for 4 cupcakes? Wow... Delicious though.
Stopped by Butter Lane Cupcakes briefly while out with a friend. The cupcakes themselves are pretty standard with 3 choices. However, the icing is what shines here. They have a myriad of flavors and I'll definitely be back to try some more (lots of choices means I have to come back!). I tasted the French Vanilla for my first trip, but I'll be back for some of their other offerings.
I love the cupcakes here! They are moist and the buttercream frosting is amazing! It just has the right amount of sweet and it goes well with the cake. I definitely want to try their cupcake classes the next time! It looks fun!
just some good ol cupcakes, with any flavor combo you want, perfect for something sweet
The best cupcakes in NYC! Love the mix n match concept allowing for everyones taste.
I have to say not only were the cupcakes tremendous but the staff was even better. I proposed to my girlfriend and the staff went above and beyond the week leading up to my engagement to make sure that everything was perfect. they even gave us champagne. highly recommend!
very, very, very upset that the Butter Lane in Park Slope closed -
BUT so happy that they're still open on E. 7th St. It's worth the trip from Bklyn.!!!!!!!!
THE BEST CUPCAKES anywhere.
The ability to choose your type of cake & frosting is wonderful. Try peanut butter frosting with banana nut bread or some of some of their surprise toppings like salted popcorn. Have fun, enjoy them and the attention & care that they bring to their treats
All favors of cupcake here r so delicious and caramel is my favorite!!!!!! I can eat 10 and more one time. I've told my all friends who like cupcakes about this shop and I think it is the best choice at East village. But just a little bit far from my home.
PEACHES, HONEY, WALNUTS, OH MY!
I'm so happy when i eat these cupcakes it makes me want to cry.
Take that money you have on reserve
and buy a delicous cupcake that you deserve
So, the 5 star reviews of this place say it all. These are some of the tastiest cupcakes I've had. They are the perfect size for having just 1 or 2 or more, who's judging? They were so good that my sister and I came in to buy some two days in a row during our only 4 day visit to NYC. The young man working behind the counter was super helpful and friendly! You get to customize your own cupcakes and the shop smells amazing. Highly recommended!
Very tasty cupcakes, very attentive and welcoming staff!
Butter Lane sells icing shots; Butter Lane delivers. Friendly staff and well-made cupcakes.
Overall, I was thoroughly disappointed. Their cupcakes were not worth the $1.50 per I spent (through Groupon), let alone the $3 they sell them for retail. The frosting was decent but the cakes were very dry.
Also, they were clearly less than happy to have my business because of the Groupon and gave me attitude about it. One person working there commented "not another Groupon order" to the guy working at the front and they refused to write "Happy Birthday" anywhere on the box because the Groupon order "could not be customized in any way." Note to business owners: if you want to use Groupon to try and drum up business, treat the customers you bring in the door well so that they'll want to come back.
Butter Lane has the most delicious cupcakes I have ever tasted! They are fresh, and the perfect sized treat. Hits the sweet tooth just right.
I like the bakery, especially the setting of order. They don't have fancy products, it's all about the combinations of cake and frosting. There are 3 kinds of cake bases- vanilla, chocolate and banana. The cake was moisture than the ones in other bakeries. The frosting was less buttery-like texture than others, which made it a good combination of their cake bases.
I had chocolate+chocolate, vanilla+chocolate, chocolate+coconut, vanilla+strawberry. They all came out very good.
Delicious cupcakes that I got with the Food for All app, so it was even cheaper and easier to order!
I went back in 2014 when i was on vacation, I saw their shop on Best Food I've Ever Eaten on the food network and when my friend and i went on vacation, it was a MUST STOP on our sight seeing list! The cupcakes were DELICIOUS!! and the service from the gentleman that helped us was Completely LOVELY!! i don't know if he's still there, and i wish i could remember his name, but he was wonderful, the cupcakes were amazing, just everything i expected and more!
Amazing cupcake baking class!!! So fun and the cupcakes are delicious!!! I learned quite a few new baking tips and met really cool people as well!!! Very well taught and an absolutely great experience! I m so happy we did this while in nyc!! Highly recommended
