Building Excellent Schools: Empowering School Leaders to Create a Better Future
Building Excellent Schools (BES) is a non-profit organization that provides school leadership development programs to support leaders in building schools that excel and sustain their results over time. BES believes that every child deserves an excellent education, and it is the responsibility of school leaders to ensure that this happens.
BES was founded in 2001 by Linda Brown and Scott Hamilton, who were both former teachers and principals. They saw firsthand the challenges faced by school leaders in creating high-performing schools, particularly those serving low-income communities. They recognized the need for a comprehensive approach to leadership development that would provide school leaders with the skills, knowledge, and support they need to succeed.
Since its inception, BES has worked with over 100 schools across the United States. Its programs are designed for both new and experienced school leaders who are committed to creating positive change in their schools. The organization's approach is based on research-based best practices in leadership development, as well as input from experienced educators.
BES offers several different programs for school leaders at various stages of their careers:
1. The Fellowship Program: This program is designed for new or aspiring principals who want to develop their skills as instructional leaders. Fellows receive intensive training on topics such as data analysis, curriculum design, teacher evaluation, and community engagement.
2. The Residency Program: This program is designed for experienced educators who want to become principals or headmasters of independent schools. Residents work alongside experienced mentors in high-performing schools while receiving training on leadership skills such as strategic planning, financial management, and board relations.
3. The Accelerator Program: This program is designed for current principals or headmasters who want to take their schools' performance to the next level. Participants receive coaching from experienced educators on topics such as instructional improvement strategies, talent management practices, and data-driven decision-making.
In addition to these programs, BES also offers customized consulting services tailored specifically to each school's needs.
One of the key strengths of BES's approach is its focus on sustainability. Rather than simply providing short-term solutions or quick fixes for struggling schools, BES works with school leaders over an extended period of time (typically three years) to build capacity within their organizations so they can continue improving long after BES's involvement ends.
Another strength of BES's approach is its emphasis on equity and social justice. The organization recognizes that many low-income students face significant barriers when it comes to accessing quality education opportunities; therefore it works closely with its partner schools' communities (including parents/guardians) so they can be involved throughout all aspects related towards student success including academic achievement goals setting process etc., which helps ensure all students have access not only academically but also socially-emotionally supportive environments where they feel safe enough explore learning opportunities without fear being judged negatively due socio-economic status differences among peers attending same institution together!
Overall Building Excellent Schools has been successful because it provides comprehensive support systems tailored specifically towards individual needs each partner institution serves while keeping equity at forefront everything does!
