Breakwater Brewing Company Review

A slightly negative attitude from the little clean cut bartender with glasses. Nothing blatant but surely he didn t make us feel welcome. They weren t busy and he cut off our tasting of the beers at two splashes. I d never been to this brewery before so I had no idea what I wanted and just settled for one that he cut us off at. The the last splash I tasted was good though, an IPA. Bravo on that front. Now that I m leaving a bad review seemingly due to the bartender, I ll just run with it and say the place is trendy. Surfboards and skateboards, bro. I won t actively go back. Maybe your experience will be positive, most people s seems to be.

They let their doordash drivers sit their for 20 minutes after the order was made and sitting in the kitchen.

The beer was great. The food is ok left a bad aftertaste in me two hour later. Staff was friendly.

If you want great food and some great beer, COME HERE!!!

Came in to the bar at 10:20pm, was not greeted by anyone. Sat down at the bar and waited for the bartender to finish socializing with a group of patrons. The bartender made eye contact several times with my group and never acknowledged us. At 10:30 he finally approached us and said "Woah! It's last call but I'll serve you anyway!" Overall beer was OK, service was terrible. The facility seems to have been recently restored, very nice. The staff is probably the next step.

I had a great tasting stout and some really good chicken wings. Chicken wings were only 3.50 for a half pound which consisted of 4 wings. But they were very meaty and deeeLish. The girl at the door was pretty cute, but the bartenders where just a couple of goofy dudes. They really should have had the girl pouring beers instead.

In 2012 my family and I fell in love with Oceanside. I'm a beer lover and love checking out breweries and ANY city I travel to. This is my favorite in Oside. The craft beer they have is terrific and the food is equally as good. The place is unique because they don't have waiters. You basically order when you walk in and then your food is brought to you. Same thing for beers, you go and get more when you want it. It's pretty neat. Definitely check out their wings -- they're really good.

I visit my cousin in Oside about once a month or so on the train from OC and cruised right past Breakwater a few times but finally we picked up a Dau pizza and had a DMJ ipa. Both were great! I won't be cruising past again. It will be my first pitstop.

More like 3.5. Good place to grab a beer with friends. The beer wasn t bad, I enjoyed it. I got their only hazy IPA. But yes- other people s review, service is pretty slow. But the staff are super friendly and laid back. I think it s just the beach vibes. Place has games in the back and plenty of seating. Didn t get to try the food.

If you're a beer connoisseur, you will probably find this microbrewery to your liking with its large array of beer varieties, plus they serve mead. Second, they serve pretty swell pizza, meant to be enjoyed with a drinking buddy.

Gross generic overpriced food. Service blew, and the beer is typical of all craft brews. Not bad. Not great. Just very generic. Nothing stands out. I'm shocked at the amount of positive reviews on here when there are so many amazing options in the area.

Food is good, if you get it. This is the second time we've ordered doordash more than an hour before closing just to find out 30min later that they canceled our order.

A little disappointed with the service tonight, we came in and had food and drinks, due to the pandemic, could not keep an open tab as seating is outside, so having to basically go back to the counter for every order kinda sucked. Blame Gavin Newsome for that. At the end of the night, filled two growler and ordered a pizza to go. Cashier, very squeaky typical cali beach kid, took the order and filled the growlers. Growlers had so much head in them, once settled, they were about 4 ounces short. Cashier also said she would bring our order out and forgot. 45 minutes later, no customers around the patio, went in to check and the food had been done and sitting out with the receipt on the box. Have never had bad service here, there are many other places around, we come from an hour away and always visit Breakwater Brewing Co. Might start looking elsewhere

Best pizza in Oceanside. Great beer selection too. It's our go-to! Our fave is the Mediterranean pizza.

Average pizza and average beer. My friends liked it, but I wouldn't go back.

Food was not to par on how the place looked. Pizza was way to greasy for being pizza. If you pick up a slice and the grease just drips off of it or there's a puddle of it on the plate, won't be going back.

Would give it zero stars but won't let me.

Their pizza is delicious and most of the beers I've had were very good to excellent. Sometimes it is too loud and crowded in the summer. Overall it is a great option right by the pier in Oside

Great restaurant! A must stop every time I come to oceanside. The food and staff are always amazing. If you like a beer, plenty to choose from. Prices are very affordable. Family friendly environment. TV's on every wall. Indoor/outdoor seating. Pics are od restaurant, menu, phone number and food. Don't miss out!

This is one of our MUST stops when driving up the coast, creating our own beer trail.

Breakwater came up on the list of breweries near San Marcos where our weekend digs were; Lakeside Resort check it out. Anyway, we started out at Stones in Carlsbad with Breakwater next on the list. Breakwater was just around the corner and totally not what I expected!

How I missed this was a pizza joint/tap house in my initial search I don't know. My first reaction was somewhat indifferent upon arrival as I guess I was expecting a typical beer tasting room. We were hungry anyway so we shrug of the pretense and sat down.

The selection of local brews is freakin AMAZING and, they offer flights. I recall at least 20ish draft offerings give or take. Our brew mistress was very knowledgeable and I think she said she dabbled in home brewing. She was real chill and offering suggestions about the menu, one being the best recommendation we've settled on each subsequent visit.

I'm sure there is more on the menu than pizza but I can't offer commentary as to how satisfying they can be. I can tell how this is the BEST PIZZA I've ever had.

Breakwater's pizza menu has a list of specialty pies two of which are fantastic. The North O and the South O are the business. The pizza baron hooking up the pizzas here got talent. When we couldn't make up our mind the waitress suggested we do half and half so we did.

You can not imagine how good this combination of flavors hooked up by the pizza baron is, you just can't. It must be experienced personally. The pizza is the only food we've eaten every time we've stopped here.

Whether it be at the end or beginning of our beer trail, Breakwater is a must stop.

I have been an Oceanside resident off and on for over 20 years. We recently moved from the country and right to downtown O'side. Breakwater was the first great find in a cool, laid back, well-run establishment by the beach. These people are fast, the food is excellent and the service is tops. GREAT find.

Good daily lunch special(a sandwich and a house beer for~$10). Great location. Pinball and some arcade games. Surfing and other sports on the tv's. Recommended

Came here during lunchtime on a weekday, busy but not overcrowded. They have a kitchen here and the food smells great. 9 TVs to watch here, I am unsure if you can request a certain channel. There are 3 pinball machines by the dining area which is a nice surprise. Independent beer, I only tried the Railslide Red and hope to come back for more. Excellent service!

Phenomenal food and staff. I have been going here for years. Some people complain about the slow service but most of the time there is one person working the entire floor. For that I say bravo! Always friendly and willing to go above and beyond to make sure you are taken care of.

Really nice staff, HUGE salads, and above average beer with a nice guest brewery offering. 4 out of 5 only because their house brewed beer could be better across the board. Some great brews, some so-so. Definitely would return if I lived in the area!

A nice little brewpub in Oceanside. Had the jalapeno poppers and a cuban sandwich; both were good. Also had a glass of the Kali Kush -- a pale ale flavored with sagebrush that had a pleasant, piney flavor.

WOW! What an excellent sandwich. My wife and I stopped in for a late lunch, arrived before 3 pm so we got the Wednesday special : the Mafia. The serving was very generous and included two scoops of coleslaw with a deliciously seasoned dressing and the sandwich was asourdough roll about a foot long that was laced with all sorts of tasty Italian meats, peppers, provelone, romaine, and dressing. Don't miss out on this amazing Wednesday special. Further, their beer list was extensive including some guest beers but we had the 'Mission Accomplished' which was a superb IPA. We're only in town for two weeks so we're glad to have found this spot on our first day, we'll be back again. Thanks also goes to the wait staff, all were friendly and food was ready quickly. I should have taken a picture of my plate when it came out, shucks, ate it! Michelle was our bartender and she was sooo wonderful, helping us get familiar with the community and fun things to do and see and always with a laugh and big smile. Back again on 3/20 gonna include a couple of pictures today. Michelle welcomed us back cheerfully. The chef did an excellent job again on our Mafia lunch special, sandwich was very tasty and love the slaw: there's a little horse radish added that really ups the flavor. Don't miss this gem for food and beer.

5 stars for food, minus 3 stars for service. Me and a buddy ordered 2 sandwiches and wings. He got a beer, I asked for a soda. They wouldn't serve me a soda due to covid...but they can serve beer. Makes sense. I got a water instead. Then I watched their employees come out of the back and use the soda machine/covid dispenser.

Buddy got his food 20 minutes later. 10 minutes after that, the appetizer came out. 10 minutes after that, I finally got my food. Ridiculous. I needed a refill on water and ketchup for the fries, but no one ever came to our table. Ever. So I got up to ask for it and was chastised for not wearing a mask. Evidently you can't get covid if you're sitting in a restaurant, but if you're standing you can.

Will not eat here again and recommend you don't either.

It is expensive, but well worth the money. The pizza was outstanding and the beer was amazing.

My boyfriend and I went there yesterday, nobody attended us while we were at our table, eventually ordered at the register and waited about an hour for the food. Lady at the register was not so friendly, she did not give me a number so when the food was ready they walked past us and put the food away. There was no communication w/ staff and customers. Had to get up twice to check if my order was ready. So unprofessional and waste of money and time.

This is my favorite place in Oceanside. They have a great selection of award winning beers. It's the best place to go and be sociable with people you don't know along with locals and friendly staff.

Beer is so so..rib tips and bruschetta, mediocre..bbq sauce was good, but when added to wood chips, we'll, you're still eating wood chips..service was the worst!

Came here because other places were closed. Pizza and beer were both great. Had the DMJ IPA and a pepperoni with mushrooms. Pleasant surprise would come back again. Staff were very friendly.

Great selection of beers, the Mason's Favorite Pizza was great (and not just because I'm named Mason), and our server was attentive and friendly. Highly recommend and would go back anytime I'm in Oceanside!

The food is pretty good. The service is atrocious... you can stand at the counter or sitting at a table and have 5 or 6 employees walk by and not acknowledge let alone offer help. Really irritating.

Couldnt tell you about this place. We got up and left after no one acknowledged us for 15 minutes but kept helping the peiple that sat down after us. Although they take your order and get your non alcoholic drinks, you have to order your beer at the counter and pay for it at the time. Local beer only, no hard liqour.

Always hit breweries when we're traveling and this was amazing in terms of the number of brews they have on tap for the size. It's like a mellow mushroom feel but with a whole bunch of house brews. You can get 4 beer flights to sample and would still have to get 4-5 flights to try them all. Has outdoor seating and a long bar inside so lots of options to choose from depending on the crew you show up with

Look, I wanted to rate this higher because when the pizza is good, its pretty darn good and they were even willing to make a pizza that apparently is off the menu as of recently which I appreciate. But...this is the 9th time that I experienced a service issue and I have to say something. To keep it simple, first time a beard hair was baked into the crust, the second time the server dumped my wings on the floor 5 feet before our table waiting 15 minutes for the order to arrive again, the next several times I ordered ahead confirming the order and showed up to have part of the order missing. While waiting, there was no acknowledgement that this was a mistake. Today I ordered in person, successfully got the discontinued pizza (so they should have been paying attention?) and the wings were missed again. The service issues are too consistent to be a fluke. Here is the $24 pizza for the record which should have been a large (per the receipt) but is a 14 inch medium that I was given. They switched the pizza from the medium box to the large box in front of me, saying it was "stuffed in the wrong size box".

Won't be back. Food was pretty good. Sucked that there were so many places to choose from in the area and we came here. Service at the bar was horrible. Waitress took my glass from my table when I wasn't even done with my beer. ( My last sip wasn't good anymore, according to her.) I wasn't even done with my food when it was picked up and then asked if I was done. Disappointment for first time visit.

Ordered through door dash and they toasted the sandwich with the cold vegetables on it including cucumbers and I ordered potato salad and got soggy fries. The mozzarella "sticks" they show a picture of are actually more like chunks but they were tasty. My mom liked her pastrami sandwich.

We spent all week visiting this brewery and getting excellent service from Cassie. Later in the week we were refused service for no real reason. The bartender claimed my brother was over served after he went to the bathroom. We tried to clarify what was happening and another bartender told me "I can refuse service to you too if you want."

Otherwise friendly environment was killed for no reason. Would recommend Bagby, Surfside or Barrel Republic over this brewery. Better service, friendlier staff, better beer.

Had plans for the day? Well, not anymore! This bar in the area is notoriously slow--avoid if possible. Takes longer than necessary even if ordering ahead of time. Fell asleep standing up; no joke (someone actually tried to take a photo of me). Dude bumped into me. Got spooked. Woke up. Was still night time.

I love the creativity of the brewers here. Fantastic selection of craft beers at great prices. Their food is also delicious and always fresh.

We went to most of the brewery's in this area. This had the best/most interesting beers, the most impressively helpful and friendly staff, and some of the best prices.

All of our brewery experiences in this area were good. But this was the best.

The Dau pizza tastes amazing. I had 2 pints and a flight of 4. Solid stuff!

The food here was okay, but the atomic wings were just usual hot, not atomic hot. I also think that the tap lines need to be cleaned, my beer tasted a little stale. Good portion for the price, so it has that going for it. The service was alright, the bar tender was not very attentive however. Speaking of our bar tender, he could be more tactful in his practice. If someone orders a beer and you think they may not like it, maybe next time offer them a sample, as opposed to insisting quite akwardly that they try it before you pour them a whole point. 4/10 would consider going again

Amazing place to have a good slice of pizza and enjoy a very good tasting beer.

Kevin, bartender is absolutely the best! No matter what day you catch him, he is always positive, happy and brings great energy to the atmosphere. On the floor, Courtney brings a new perspective to the old school impeccable service. She is so fast, thorough, pays attention to detail, remembers her clients, excellent customer service, displays a true eagerness to make her customers have a great experience. Kevin and Courtney is just the beginning, the other servers we've had, hold the same values. Great patio, lots of TVs, next to Cold Stone and a #1 spot on our list of chill places to hang.

The Rasbiscus mead is my favorite drink, but all the beers are good too. And the pizza is great

Really good beer in a casual relaxed almost diner like atmosphere. Kind of run-of-the-mill bar food. I didn't have any so I can't really speak as to its quality. Service was good and it was a generally pleasant experience. Good music.
