Born This Way Foundation: Empowering Young People to Create a Kinder and Braver World
Born This Way Foundation is a non-profit organization founded by Lady Gaga and her mother, Cynthia Germanotta, in 2012. The foundation's mission is to support the wellness of young people and empower them to create a kinder and braver world. Through its programs, resources, and partnerships, Born This Way Foundation aims to promote mental health awareness, combat bullying and harassment, foster kindness and compassion, and inspire positive change.
The foundation's name comes from Lady Gaga's hit song "Born This Way," which celebrates individuality, self-expression, and acceptance. The song's message resonated with millions of fans around the world who felt marginalized or discriminated against because of their race, gender identity, sexual orientation or other differences. By creating the Born This Way Foundation (BTWF), Lady Gaga wanted to channel that energy into a movement for social justice.
Since its inception in 2012, BTWF has grown into a global force for good that reaches millions of young people every year through its online platforms (including social media channels like Facebook,Twitter, and Instagram), community events (such as the annual #BeKind21 challenge), school programs (like Channel Kindness), research initiatives (like the Youth Mental Health First Aid program)and advocacy efforts(like supporting LGBTQ+ rights).
One of BTWF's core programs is called "Braver Conversations," which provides resources for parents, caregivers, and educators on how to talk about mental health with young people. The program includes guides on how to recognize signs of distress or crisis in children or teens; tips on how to start conversations about mental health; information on where to find professional help if needed; stories from real-life individuals who have struggled with mental illness;and more.
Another key initiative is "Channel Kindness," which empowers young people around the world to tell their own stories of kindness, making an impact in their communities through storytelling. The platform features articles, videos, podcasts, and other content created by youth reporters who are passionate about making positive change. The goal is not onlyto showcase inspiring examplesof kindness but alsoto encourage others totake action themselves.
BTWF also partners with other organizations, such as DonorsChoose.org,to fund projects that promote kindness, inclusion, and well-being in schools across America.Through this partnership,BTWF has helped fund over 1 million dollars worthof classroom projects since 2017.In addition, the foundation supports research initiatives aimed at improving youth mental health, such as Youth Mental Health First Aid,a training program designedto teach adults howto identify, youngpeople experiencingmentalhealth challengesand provide themwith appropriate support.
