Black Hills & Badlands Tourism Association: Your Ultimate Guide to Exploring the Wild West
If you're looking for a destination that offers breathtaking natural beauty, rich history, and endless adventure opportunities, look no further than the Black Hills & Badlands region of South Dakota. And when it comes to planning your trip, there's no better resource than the Black Hills & Badlands Tourism Association.
As the official tourism organization for this stunning area of the country, we are dedicated to helping visitors make the most of their time here. Whether you're interested in exploring Mount Rushmore and other national parks or discovering hidden gems off the beaten path, we have all the information you need to plan an unforgettable trip.
Discover National Parks and State Parks
One of our biggest draws is our incredible collection of national parks and state parks. Of course, Mount Rushmore is at the top of many visitors' must-see lists - and with good reason. This iconic monument features four towering presidential faces carved into granite cliffsides. But there's so much more to explore beyond this famous landmark.
For example, Custer State Park is a sprawling wilderness area that offers opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing, wildlife viewing (including herds of bison!), scenic drives through winding canyons and over mountain passes - even a chance to see cowboys in action at one of its twice-weekly buffalo roundups.
Wind Cave National Park boasts one-of-a-kind geological formations like boxwork (a honeycomb-like pattern on cave walls) as well as above-ground prairie landscapes where bison roam free.
Badlands National Park showcases dramatic rock formations that seem almost otherworldly in their stark beauty; it's also home to fossils from ancient creatures like saber-toothed cats and rhinoceroses.
And those are just a few examples! With nine state parks in addition to these five national treasures (including Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway), there's always something new waiting around every bend in this corner of South Dakota.
Explore Attractions
Of course, not everyone who visits us is looking for outdoor adventure - which is why we also offer plenty of attractions that cater to different interests. For example:
- The Crazy Horse Memorial: This ongoing project aims to create a massive sculpture honoring Native American leader Crazy Horse; when completed (which could take decades), it will be even larger than Mount Rushmore.
- Deadwood: This historic town was once home base for Wild West legends like Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok; today it offers casinos as well as museums dedicated to its colorful past.
- Wall Drug Store: A quirky roadside attraction since 1931 offering everything from homemade donuts served fresh daily at 5 am sharp!
- Reptile Gardens: Home to over 200 species including giant tortoises weighing up 600 pounds!
