Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry: Igniting the Power and Promise of Youth
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry is a non-profit organization that has been serving children in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties for over 50 years. Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. We believe that every child has potential, but not every child has opportunity. That's where we come in.
Our programs are designed to help children facing adversity by providing them with a positive role model who can offer guidance, support, and encouragement. By matching children with caring adult mentors, we aim to help them reach their full potential academically, socially, and emotionally.
We offer two main programs: Community-Based Mentoring and School-Based Mentoring. In Community-Based Mentoring, volunteers are matched with a child between the ages of 6-18 who lives in their local community. They meet regularly for outings such as going to the park or attending sporting events. In School-Based Mentoring, volunteers meet with their mentee once a week during school hours at their mentee's school.
Our programs have proven results - children who participate in our mentoring programs are more likely to graduate from high school on time and less likely to engage in risky behaviors such as drug use or violence.
But we can't do it alone - we rely on donations from individuals like you to fund our programs. Your donation can make a big difference in the life of a child facing adversity.
In addition to monetary donations, we also rely on volunteers who are willing to give their time as mentors. Our volunteer mentors come from all walks of life - they may be college students looking for an opportunity to give back or retirees who want to stay active while making a difference in their community.
Becoming a mentor is easy - simply fill out an application online or attend one of our information sessions. We provide training and support to all of our mentors to ensure that they are equipped to make a positive impact on their mentee's life.
If you're not able to donate or volunteer, there are still ways you can help. Spread the word about our organization by sharing our website or social media pages with your friends and family. You never know who might be looking for an opportunity to give back.
In conclusion, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry is a vital organization that is making a difference in the lives of children in our community. By donating or volunteering, you can help us continue to ignite the power and promise of youth. Together, we can create a brighter future for all children.
