Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Black Hills: Igniting the Power and Promise of Youth
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Black Hills is a non-profit organization that has been serving children in South Dakota since 1977. Our mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. We believe that every child has potential, but not every child has opportunity. That's where we come in.
Our programs are designed to help children facing adversity by providing them with a positive role model who can offer guidance, support, and encouragement. By matching children with caring adult mentors, we aim to help them develop confidence, self-esteem, and life skills that will serve them well into adulthood.
We offer two main programs: community-based mentoring and school-based mentoring. In our community-based program, volunteers are matched with children between the ages of 6-18 who live in their local area. They meet regularly for outings such as going to a movie or playing sports together. In our school-based program, volunteers meet with their mentee at school during lunch or after-school hours.
Our organization relies on donations from individuals and businesses to fund our programs. We also have several fundraising events throughout the year such as Bowl for Kids' Sake and Golf Fore Kids' Sake which allow us to continue providing services free-of-charge to families in need.
Volunteers are essential to our success as an organization. We provide training and ongoing support for all mentors so they feel equipped to make a positive impact on their mentee's life. Our volunteers come from all walks of life - college students looking for experience working with youth, retirees wanting to give back to their community, professionals seeking personal fulfillment outside of work - anyone can be a mentor!
