I've been a "Big" for two years and while I was skeptical at first, Dallas from BBBS matched me with a "Little" that I could only describe as a "Little me." My Little reminds me so much of my younger self!!! I've had a positive experience and while my Little has since graduated high school, we still keep in touch.

I also want to add that the backgrounds are necessary because unlike many school run mentorship programs, BBBS allows students to communicate with their mentors outside school (i.e. phone and text). There are rules to protect both parties but this is an important difference between BBBS and school run programs were mentors are limited to in person meetings (usually once week) at the school. Both types of programs have their pros and cons but I appreciated getting to know my Little outside the school walls. Plus, teens prefer texts, so we talk more which is great cause I feel like I really know my Little.

Was Looking to volunteer and was excited that when BBBS came to my work looking for people, I hopped on it. I apply and did the interview process it seem to go well. I have a clean background, about to go in to law enforcement and had time to set aside for BBBS. They said all was great etc. I did mention I was gay because it should not matter who you are as long as long as your inspiring to be a big brother. I am straight acting and keep that side to myself. Anyway, I got a call a said they were working on my match. 2 weeks later I get a a letter stating I was not a right fit and please dont contact them for a reason as they wont give one. Its not my background so I really feel it because I am gay. I did some research and have not heard many gay people doing this. It maybe this location but feel a little discrimination towards LGBT in there business. I dont recommend applying. I hate they keep coming to my work looking for people where our work is LGBT supportive.

Oldest, largest, and best youth mentoring service in the United States. Tampa Bay is Big Brothers Big Sisters country and participating in some of the fundraising events for this agency has been some of the most fun I've had here.

So disappointed with this program. Both my children's matches were failures. My oldest daughter got a match that wasn't interested in listening to her problems, cause she herself was a high school teacher and was tired of listening to the drama. As she told my child. My youngest child finally got a big, long while after her older sister and it was all she ever wanted. Just to be let down. I get it covid 19. But why not hire someone in the right age group that can handle it. My daughter was so happy after all she been thru. Just to be let down months after she thought she was bonding with her big.
So sad that my children got recommend by the school counselor to Big Brother Big Sister program due to some unavoidable trauma in their lives. Yet get let down.

About Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay is a non-profit organization that has been serving the community for over 50 years. The organization's mission is to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. They believe that every child has the potential to succeed in life, and they work tirelessly to help children achieve their goals.

The organization was founded in 1966 by a group of concerned citizens who wanted to make a difference in the lives of young people. Since then, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Tampa Bay has grown into one of the largest mentoring organizations in the country, with over 1,500 matches made each year.

One of the unique aspects of Big Brothers Big Sisters is their commitment to creating long-term relationships between mentors and mentees. They believe that these relationships are essential for helping children develop self-confidence, improve academic performance, and build positive social skills.

The organization offers several different programs designed to meet the needs of children at different stages in their lives. Their Community-Based Mentoring program matches adult volunteers with children between the ages of 6-18 who live in Pinellas or Hillsborough counties. These mentors spend time with their mentees doing activities they both enjoy such as playing sports or going on outings together.

Another program offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters is School-Based Mentoring which pairs adult volunteers with students during school hours at select schools throughout Pinellas County. This program provides students with an additional positive role model while also helping them improve academic performance.

In addition to these programs, Big Brothers Big Sisters also offers specialized mentoring programs for specific populations such as LGBTQ+ youth or those involved in foster care systems.

Big Brothers Big Sisters relies heavily on donations from individuals and corporations to fund its programs. They have several fundraising events throughout the year including Bowl For Kids' Sake which raises money through bowling tournaments held across Pinellas County.

Overall, if you're looking for an impactful way to give back to your community while making a difference in a child's life - consider volunteering or donating your time/money towards this amazing cause!
