Cycling is dangerous

Beverley Grammar School's senior leadership team need to be made aware of the following. Your pupils are riding bicycles recklessly on the public highways each morning and after school. I have witnessed BGS boys doing wheelies in front of traffic, turning without signalling, riding on and off the road and pavement with warning. This morning I witnessed BGS pupils riding in a group of 5 that consumed the whole of the pavement in Admiral Walker Way. This is unlawful. Moreover, where is the consideration for pedestrians, especially the elderly, disabled, mothers and children, pregnant women?
The nights are drawing in, being dark when the school day ends. However, many BGS boys do not have lights on their bike which is a legal requirement.
The area in and around the school in Queensgate is immensely bust during both school runs. These cyclists help cause traffic jams.
I am equally concerned for the safety of BGS pupils who ride to school. Concerningly, this seems to be an accident waiting to happen.
The left pretend that cycling will somehow miraculously save the planet. This is absolute, unscientific, unproven nonsense. No consideration whatsoever is given for the safety of the cyclists on busy roads, pedestrians and other road users.
In the interest of public safety in the 21st century, it is about time this crass Victorian notion of vulnerable cyclists cycling alongside vehicles from small hatchbacks to articulated lorries be banned.

Need for cycling safety

Good, high achieving school.

That said, the parking situation outside the school is chaotic and hazardous. The school and ERYC have a duty to provide better parking provision for parents.

Moreover, the fact that the school and ERYC are encouraging boys to cycle to and from school, on busy roads at peak times, is disturbing. I have witnessed BGS boys on bicycles cycle on and off the road and vice versa without any warning. BGS boys on bikes often turn without indication.

The establishment, in their distorted 'wisdom', brainwash children to believe that cycling is healthy. It is not very healthy when, heaven forbid, a child is knocked off their bike and injured or worse. That is not healthy. Regardless of who is to blame, the cyclist will always fair worse.

Also, cyclists are not insured, which presents a real problem to both cyclist and other road user in the event of an RTA. Neither are they identifiable. Registration plates and system is sorely required.

Cyclists are also a potential hazard to pedestrians.

BGS and ERYC would do well to advise BGS boys using bike to and from school to do so in a safe manner for both themselves and other road users, and to stick to the rules of the public highways.

You have to wonder why some parents allow their children to cycle to and from school on such busy, dangerous roads?
