Mom came to Bethesda from a different care center and within a short time looked and felt SO MUCH BETTER. Their dietitians were great, the staff amazing and the rooms are nice and allow residents to have their own things. Mom went from probably going to pass very soon when she moved to Bethesda to living another 3 years which allowed her to see her first great-grand daughter, turn 84 and be with us a little longer. I stayed with her in vigil when she passed and the staff were so helpful in a difficult time.

We have a family member in Bethesda. Of course when she first got there everything was fine and clean and her every need was looked after.Our request for her well being were met but over time things have changed. Her clothes are usually disgusting, stained, and not changed for days. If we aren't there during meal time and arrive after meal, we see her full of food and not cleaned up. We make sure she has plenty of clothing to wear so that she has fresh clothes each day. The laundry staff only washes the clothes when they do. There is no treating stains or making them presentable. Often we find her without oxygen...well she is wearing the oxygen thing in her nose but the tank is empty every time we walk in the room. After she has been there awhile a shower for her is hard to come by... when she went into the facility she was given a shower on certain evenings each week. Now it is days before she has one unless we say something. It is understood that there will be some physical deterioration but she was walking when she entered the home. Now she can not hardly do anything herself. We had to beg to make sure that she was able to walk as much as possible. We found her being pushed to meals in a wheel chair. Makes things go faster for the understaffed workers. She now has gone down hill so much that she is lifted out of her chaired with a mechanical device and dragged into the bathroom etc to use the toilet when they get there to take her. She was getting wonderful therapy regularly. Not anymore. If they have time she gets therapy. We have to continually check on her to make sure she is taken care of. Her bathroom nurse light was pulled making it more urgent and no one came to her room for over 10 minutes or more to check on her needs. The facility is understaffed and quite honestly we should call the ASPCA because animals get better treatment. Whoever runs the home... should have their family in there. I am certain they wouldn't allow their family members to be treated that way. Depression sets in after awhile. Most people regularly shower and are taken care of to feel better and alive. These people are treated as well, they are old and going to die soon so ... I am quite certain that someone from the Volunteers of America is getting a chunk of money because the facility is understaffed and they just raised her monthly rate...I know that a couple of the aids work really hard to do their best but when they are understaffed and have one entire floor of residents to watch over something bad is going to happen. Volunteers of America need to be investigated...Why don't we move her.. well we would love to but we have no control over that... all we can do is check on her often and make sure the staff knows we are WATCHING!
