My father was in Berlasco and hated it there; despite staff saying that he "loves being here". He had the onset of dementia when he was put in by my siblings against his will (and my mother also did not want him to be put into Berlasco and preferred a place in Toowoomba). Staff talked to my mother and father like they were both babies and once my father told a Fillipino woman to stop speaking to him as if he were a baby - and she reported him to the manager, and my father was sternly put back in his place and cautioned. He was only asserting his rights to be treated with dignity and respect; but when he finally had enough of being spoken "at", he was sternly put back in his place and he was from thereon very frightened to speak up for himself. He suffered a heart attack, and had a bowel obstruction and was sent to hospital only to return back to Berlasco and put on morphine in his bed against his will. He was told that it was to help with pain. He died as it was a murder drip (as I call it) into his hand and he died at 7pm on 20th August 2018. No attempt to deal with the bowel obstruction and his heart attack was not terminal. I think it was because of his age (92) that they felt he was a lost cause and better off put to sleep. I would never ever recommend anyone put their loved ones into this place; as my mother was deeply distressed by what she saw on every visit to him; I have photos of daddy long leg spiders crawling over him as he is asleep; and ants on the wall and on his bed linen too and on him; old processed ham and salami in the fridge in his room that was left for weeks and nobody bothered to clean and maintain his fridge; I went on a Current Affair and so did other people (with footage of Berlasco by the journalist who video recorded him walking through Berlasco,.He never went much for fresh air outside and walks, and when I complained whoever I spoke to (Fillipino) and I struggled to understand their accent which caused further distress to my mother and I, I was told that "he likes sleeping all day". He never got any sunlight and his face and arms and hands became so pale and pasty and grey looking. Because he was not exercising his legs and walking around, he became quickly reliant upon a walker as his muscles were wasting away. Within 2 years he was totally wheelchair bound; he had absolutely NO MUSCLE on his calves and thighs. I was horrified with the care but my siblings refused to move him as it was close for them to visit (once every 4 to 6 months for one sibling, and the other sibling she stopped visiting after the 2nd year). Dad was in Berlaso for 4 years. Because nobody from Berlasco listened to me and thought I was a bother and did not go about cleaning the spiders from his room, the ants, maintain his fridge, I was banned from visiting my father for 6 months and towards the end of the 6 month ban, I received an email saying that should I go to the media again, then I will be banned permanently from ever seeing my father again at Berlasco. I was too emotionally drained, as was my mother, to take it further and we did not want to both be banned from seeing him, so we did not take it to the Royal Commission nor anywhere else. Within a year they had refurbished my father's room but the damage had been done to him mentally and emotionally and physically.
