Double check the hours of operation with their official website. They have not updated the google listing to match their official pandemic hours of operation. Before you waste your time for a visit- you should call to verify they are open. Otherwise you will be met by rude security guards excited to you they are closed you will be sad to realize you wasted your prayer time.

Reverence, beauty, stunning meaningful details in a Basilica off DC's political beaten path.
We celebrated a Saturday afternoon Vigil Mass. For any Catholic or Christian in Parish / Church that gives doubt of organized religion. The Basilica is the closest place to the Vatican City where your Soul may be strengthened in the true Faith in God.

Very unwelcoming parish. One usher was incredibly rude to me on the night of the Vigil for Life and didn t convey the spirit of the Catholic Church. We were sitting on the floor in a space where we were told we were allowed to sit by several personnel working at the Vigil for Life Mass, and one specific usher came up and yelled at us to vacate the area. When we questioned him and told him we were told we were allowed to sit in that particular area, he immediately told us he is going to call security. If he apologized for the inconsistencies amongst their staff or simply kindly asked us to move, then I wouldn t have questioned him,but I had a right to question him since I had been sitting in that particular area for several hours at that point and there was nowhere else for us to sit at this point. In addition to that experience, I wasn t very pleased by the excessive amount of extraordinary ministers. I wish more tradition existed in a place as beautiful as this Basilica. Choir was amazing though.

This is my favorite church. When I use to live in DC area, never missed any Sundays mass. Both upper and lower church are awesome. Lots of tourists, but very quiet and can pray without any interruption.

Very lovely environment. Great services. Everything was beautiful. All of the employees are super kind except for the (I don't know his name) kinda tall Hispanic younger guy who works as a guard in the gift shop area. He had a very abrasive tone and was rude. Everyone else was great though.

I have been coming to this Basilica for many years and each time I am amazed at how beautiful it is. The altars that surround the main Church Nave are beautiful and reflect their name be it a saint or a country. The Irish sanctuary is reminiscent of Eire with its light and beauty. This church should be on everyone's list of what to see in Washington, DC.

It was beautiful. I was awestruck- if you are ever in Alexandria or DC, you should put it on your list. Not only was it beautiful(as I said before), but the staff were very helpful and kind. The artwork is amazing!!! They also have complementary audio tours that were very educational and explanatory. Would rate 10 stars if possible!

About Basilica of the National Shrine

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is a magnificent Roman Catholic Church located in Washington, D.C. It is considered to be the largest church in North America and one of the ten largest churches in the world. The Basilica is dedicated to Mary, who is venerated by Catholics as the Mother of God.

The history of this beautiful church dates back to 1913 when it was first proposed by Bishop Thomas Shahan. The construction began in 1920 and continued for over 60 years until its completion in 1990. The Basilica has been designed with a combination of Byzantine and Romanesque architectural styles, which gives it a unique appearance.

One of the most striking features of this church is its massive dome that rises up to 329 feet above ground level. It is adorned with beautiful mosaics that depict scenes from both Old and New Testaments, as well as images from Catholic tradition.

Inside, visitors can find numerous chapels dedicated to various saints and religious figures such as St. Joseph, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. John Paul II, Our Lady of Guadalupe among others; each chapel has its own unique design and artwork.

The Great Upper Church houses many impressive works including an enormous mosaic depicting Christ Pantocrator (Ruler over All) surrounded by angels; it also contains several side altars dedicated to different saints such as Saint Patrick or Saint Francis Xavier.

In addition to being a place for worship and prayer for Catholics worldwide, The Basilica also serves as an important cultural center hosting concerts featuring renowned musicians from around the world throughout the year; these events are open not only for Catholics but also for people from all walks-of-life who appreciate music or art.

Visitors can take guided tours through this magnificent building where they will learn about its history while admiring its stunning architecture and artwork; there are also audio guides available if you prefer self-guided tours at your own pace.

If you're planning on visiting Washington D.C., make sure you add The Basilica on your list! This awe-inspiring structure will leave you breathless with its beauty while providing an opportunity for spiritual reflection amidst all that hustle-bustle city life offers!
