Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki Review

What a surprise to realize that this museum normally free (like all those of the kind in NZ and Australia) ends up paying for foreigners. Surely because we are in the tourist Auckland ... We took advantage of all the museums that offered us these two countries, showing a real advance in the ease of access to culture. What a disappointment to be faced with this ultimate museum putting tourists away. Congratulations, Auckland all inclusive!

My favourite museum in Auckland! Diverse topics, great permanent exhibitions and temporary ones. Good coffee and the museum shop is worth a visit. Try the roof terrace for a different perspective...

It's an international award winning building design, with great views and good coffee.

Always a nice place to visit. The gallery has had loads of upgrades and seems to change out the exhibits pretty often. The cafe is pretty good too. The room with all the dot stickers is fun for the kids too.

Located in the center of New Zealand s capital, the Auckland art gallery explores the work of the most well-known artists in the country. Likewise, a few regions of the museum are designed specifically for social media-friendly photography. Remember: many blogs claim that admission is free. However, admission is only free for long time residents of New Zealand and requires proof.

Gallery is fine, arts is modern. Thought there is one show of classic art, that makes this gallery not useless completely. Make sure you take any residence proof to get a free entry, otherwise it costs.

The Auckland Art Gallery is great place to visit , and wander in a fabulous building. I thought the Denmark Design exhibition was excellent , and loved the Louise Henderson artworks.

We live the exhibitions here. This time a much larger than ever dreamed special exhibition Frances Hodgkins. Great.

Fantatsic gallery, the building is a work of art in itself. Super nice staff, not to many stuffy art snobs either, just people enjoying the great works on display.

AMAZING!
A must do in Auckland. The gallert s Architecture in itself is a must see. A classic building and the most contemporary addition blend perfectly. The art inside is also incredible; from Picasso and Monet to incredible local artists and an impressive Maori art collection. I totally recommend it. Best museum I ve been in NZ

Should be among the top attractions to visit for all tourists in Auckland - very accessible modern airy building overlooking Albert Park, enhances all exhibits perfectly. Will revisit if the opportunity arises.

Amazing art pieces with a beautiful story line. Would highly recommend coming back, just if you have children beware because there are a lot of close up art work/crafts. They cannot touch these art pieces, so always have supervision.

Excellent and highly recommended if you have some time in Auckland. Variety of local and international, classic and contemporary art, paired with regular events for kids. Fantastic

Fantastic place, however the exhibition of contemporary art is quite poor

An intricately constructed (check out the ceiling woodwork) destination to spend some time mulling over contemporary and classic art. General exhibitions are free and visiting installations are worth a look. A trendy cafe and gift shop completes the picture.

Great permanent collections, excellent installations. Worth a visit.

It is worth the visit if you are in Auckland. Most exports are simple but interesting.

The reception staff and during the tour are very friendly and help you with any questions you may have.

A very good collection of old, modern, permanent and temporary exhibitions

Highly recommend the Obliteration Room installation by Yayoi Kasuma. Each person is given a page of circular stickers to place in the room. The cumulative effect is quite striking. There is no cost for entry. There are also a number of other exhibits and paintings which makes for an interesting visit.

Enjoyable experience and great space to enjoy art. Nice balance of local and international art. Please note you need to check in your backpacks etc at counter - this is a free service. Excellent way to spend a couple of quiet and educational hours!

There's one room with priceless old paintings and it's just the most amazing thing!

Nice collection of plenty of contemporary and modern art, good amount from New Zealand artists. Paintings of tattooed Maori faces being the highlight. Good for a couple of hours of walking around

After walk around at art Gallery, then I found nice and peaceful for chill out too.

Just a meet-up at the cafe. It was ok. Standard glass-cabinet type service. Tea only in teabags. Nice and quiet, pleasant staff.

Nice place. Not to be compared with the national gallery in London, but very pleasant.

A great space, filled with oddly curated modern art. I was disappointed, but perhaps was unfairly expecting to be able to compare it to a US gallery of the comparable size.

Was only working in the art photography area downstairs with Jennifer and Paul Chapman on an HP printing issue...thoroughly nice people to deal with.

Fantastic place. The guide had amazing knowledge and told us some really interesting and engaging stories about the art work on display. All other staff we met were also super helpful and nice. Everything was impeccably clean.

Worth a visit. Really good Maori portraiture exhibition when we came, and they let us in the kids play area, which was nice of them.

Superbly well curated, told a narrative of particularly their New Zealand collection and I feel that I learned a lot. Best of all, permanent galleries are free!

An interesting placw to spend yoir weekend. 20 NZD per person for the extrance. You can find some local and international arts here, with interesting guidance to guide you think and imagine.

This is a great gallery. Worth at least half a days visit. Also a very good coffee shop.

Very nice gallery. Many different exhibits. Unfortunately, if you are not a local, you must pay an entrance fee of $20 for adult. That does not include the featured exhibit.

Auckland Art Gallery is one of the main reasons that keep us in Auckland. It is current, vibrant, engaging, and inviting visitors to experience something else other than their normal lives. At the moment they have "Denmark Design" exhibition which will stay on until 2nd February 2020 and Colin McCahon, "From the Archive: Colin McCahon in Auckland." Please enjoy :)

It was cool and I like the way it looks and the nude paintings were also very good but the descriptions by the staff were pretty dumb.

Interesting art gallery. I don't have an eye for art but the portraits by Goldie were impressive. Wonderful collection to walk through.

The hall of art in Auckland, but lack of heavyweight art

The gallery was great, but it was really incredible for kids. We spent hours here making 3d Xmas kauri and pohutukawa trees and creating Forrest rubbings for the gallery wall. Wonderful place for kids in the school holidays. Staff were helpful and informative and engaged the kids with fascinating facts.

Great to take a break during the day here. Well curated.
