Asian Law Alliance: Providing Legal Assistance to the Asian/Pacific Islander Community
The Asian Law Alliance (ALA) is a non-profit organization that has been providing legal assistance to the Asian/Pacific Islander community for over 40 years. The organization was founded in 1977 by a group of law students who recognized the need for legal services in the community. Since then, ALA has helped tens of thousands of people in obtaining decent housing, justice in the immigration process, and access to basic human and legal rights.
Today, despite progress made towards equality and justice for all, Asian/Pacific Islanders continue to be denied fundamental rights. Discrimination based on race or ethnicity still exists in many areas of life including employment, housing, education and healthcare. ALA continues to keep its doors open for those individuals who are limited in English, who do not understand the legal system or cannot afford legal fees.
ALA's mission is to provide high-quality legal services that are culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate. The organization offers a range of services including immigration law assistance, housing advocacy and tenant counseling as well as civil rights litigation.
Immigration Law Assistance
Immigration law can be complex and confusing especially for those whose first language is not English. ALA provides free or low-cost immigration law assistance to individuals seeking citizenship or permanent residency status. The organization also assists with family-based petitions such as spousal visas or green cards for parents.
Housing Advocacy
Accessing affordable housing can be challenging especially when faced with discrimination based on race or ethnicity. ALA provides tenant counseling services aimed at preventing evictions due to landlord harassment or retaliation against tenants asserting their rights under California's Tenant Protection Act.
Civil Rights Litigation
Discrimination based on race or ethnicity violates basic human rights protected by federal laws such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibits employment discrimination based on race/color/national origin/religion/sex/gender identity/sexual orientation/pregnancy status). ALA provides civil rights litigation services aimed at holding employers accountable when they violate these laws.
In addition to these core programs, ALA also offers community education workshops aimed at empowering individuals with knowledge about their basic human and legal rights. These workshops cover topics such as workers' compensation claims filing procedures; how-to guides on filing complaints against landlords; understanding your lease agreement; etcetera.
