The old building was transformed, the building is beautiful, and the environment is beautiful. Several exhibitions are being viewed here, including Nara Michi and many more. The exhibition hall has good lighting effects. There is a terrace upstairs, you can see the sea and the Central Building. Surrounded by greenery, it is comfortable to rest.

The old building has been reorganized and reactivated, which makes the overall environment very beautiful!
In addition to visiting the exhibition, you can also look around the city and overlook the sea from the rooftop platform!
Makes people think again and again! !!

There are many lecture halls inside, which is a very leisurely place. There are many rails underground, as well as the ancient artillery on display, which reminds people of the old appearance of the ancient arsenal. There are many trees and many places for people to rest.

When the semi-historic site is nowhere to be seen, the tranquility of the downtown area, the most loved the bridge and the old rails, there are many photographs, and after 4 pm, the high-rise buildings are blocked from blocking the sun, which is not good for photography.

The term "urban jungle" has never been used so well to describe the environment of a gigantic and labyrinthine cultural establishment. It is literally hidden between Wan Chai and Admiralty in the heart of a thick tangle of trees and greenery.
While walking there, one feels the influence of the past and the contemporary architectural touches trying to respond and coexist harmoniously. Strolling among these works and in a prodigious calm is could not be more pleasant.
The artistic collections are also worth the long walk in the sun - or rather a hike! - to get to this Center perched in the heights, and inaccessible by public transport.

The Hong Kong chapter of the Asia Society Center (...

The Hong Kong chapter of the Asia Society Center (free entry) is found within the historic grounds of the former Explosives Magazine of the old British Victoria Barracks in Admiralty district. Opening hours are 11am to 6pm daily (closed Mondays).

First this is an interesting heritage site and important link to Hong Kong early colonial and maritime history. The grounds include magazine rooms, laboratory and barracks built from as early as the mid 19th century and used until the 1980s. The grounds were refit for usage by the Asia Society Centre in 2005, adding modern architecture, sculpture garden and refitting several buildings into exhibition space.

The sculpture garden in particular is true urban retreat and real surprise for those who manage to find their way here. Visitors are treated to contemporary sculptures, double decked bridge structure and excellent elevated views of the Admiralty skyline. You can see the harbour from here as well.

The former magazine rooms now serve as exhibition space. Some incredible shows such as the Caravaggio and Dead Sea Scrolls exhibitions have been held here in the past. Recently we visited to view the "Story of Light" exhibition of prominent 20th century Hong Kong artist Hon Chi-fun (1922-2019), showcasing over 30 of his works spanning four decades. This is a nice opportunity to learn about this local artist and see a large collection of his works in a single location.

Overall, we have been happy with the exhibitions held at the Asia Society Centre over the years. Often they are low key but at times, they are very good and worth making time to view even during shorter trips to Hong Kong. A visit to the Asia Society to view the historical buildings and spend time in the sculpture garden is something worth doing year round.

As an affiliate of the Asia Society global network...

As an affiliate of the Asia Society global network with 12 centers, Asia Society Hong Kong Center was established in 1990 by a group of Hong Kong community leaders, led by the late Sir Q.W. Lee, the honorary chairman of Hang Seng Bank.

In February 2012, Hong Kong Center established its new permanent home in Admiralty, Hong Kong at the Old Victoria Barracks, Former Explosives Magazine site.

Steeped in history, cultural significance and natural beauty, the 1.364 hectare site, which houses a group of four former British military buildings, was originally built by the British Army in the mid-19th century for explosives and ammunition production and storage. Through careful conservation, restoration and adaptive re-use, this heritage site was successfully transformed into a cultural, artistic and intellectual hub in Hong Kong in 2012 and offers a broad variety of programs in the form of lectures, performances, film screenings and exhibitions to the community.

Asia Society Hong Kong Center was established entirely with local funding and is supported through membership dues, fundraising events, and contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations that work together to support and advance its mission.

It is the former Explosives Magazine of the old Victoria Barracks, a site steeped in history, cultural significance and natural beauty. When you visit the theatre, note how thick the walls are. Some are more than 1m thick. Also note the rails on ground which were used to transport the heavy guns and ammunition. Also look for the signs of former British navy on the stone walls. Attached please find some photos I took before the site was revitalized as the ASHK.

The 1.364 hectare site, which houses a group of four former British military buildings, was originally built by the British Army in the mid-19th century for explosives and ammunition production and storage. It was then expanded and taken over by the Royal Navy in the early 20th century. The site was later abandoned in 1990s until it was granted to ASHK by the HKSAR government for adaptive reuse. The heritage site was an integral part of the British military lands and as one of the few remaining sites, it is an important tangible link to Hong Kong's past.

It wasn't during the exhibition period, but I didn't really see it, but the structure itself was renovated from the old British artillery barracks. In addition, bushes grow in all directions and streams flow, not as much as the nearby Hong Kong park, but it has a good taste.

I have attended 3 events at this location and all have been set up very professionally. The rooftop is an excellent venue for a cocktail party. I would consider it a somewhat fancy venue rather than casual.

A beautifully executed adaptive reuse of a colonial-era armoury plus new construction of a multipurpose hall, rooftop garden and restaurant. The Asia Society hosts an impressive programme of arts and business seminars and movie screenings, as well as 2 to 3 exhibitions in the gallery every year. It is a must-see destination in Hong Kong, and with it's city-centre location, an easy place to visit again and again.

Beautiful space - modern building retro fitting to work with the older historical buildings and the hill side AND an oasis in the middle of the bustling city.

Lots of different cultural activities (Holocaust memorial sessions, Diwali sessions, International Yoga Day, Art Basel party, ....) for free or for a nominal fee. Beautifully curated exhibit that changes every few months.

An artistic monument is now the site of the Hong Kong Centre of the Asia Society. This place is part of the former British Army Admiralty Camp, and has been restored after the restoration of 4 historic buildings with multi-purpose venues, outdoor theaters, flowing pools and rooms. In the middle garden, the outdoor space is open to the outside world, while the interior is mainly to display the works of artists and promote artistic appreciation.

Great place to get away from the city a bit and check out interesting contemporary art for free!
In a short walking distance from the metro you will feel like in nature. Have a bit of a rest from the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong here and listen to the birds on the rooftop!

The Asia center of NYC based and Rockefeller founded Asia Society. It's characteristic of the HK art scene that this, albeit small, is one of the better outlets for international art. It sits in a former British military explosives magazine on a hill right behind Pacific Place in a quite spot with a fairly nice view on the harbour.
