Art Works Downtown: A Hub for Artistic Expression and Community Engagement
Art Works Downtown is a non-profit organization that has been at the forefront of promoting art and culture in the San Rafael community for over two decades. Founded in 1999, this vibrant arts center has become a hub for artistic expression, creativity, and community engagement.
At Art Works Downtown, we believe that art is not just a form of entertainment but an essential part of our lives. Our mission is to support emerging and established artists by providing affordable studio space, exhibition opportunities, educational programs, and resources that enable them to thrive creatively. We also aim to foster cultural diversity by showcasing works from different backgrounds and perspectives.
One of the unique features of Art Works Downtown is its historic building located in downtown San Rafael. The building was originally built in 1878 as a hardware store but was later converted into an arts center in 1999. The building's architecture reflects its rich history while also providing modern amenities such as gallery spaces, classrooms, artist studios, offices, event spaces.
We offer various programs throughout the year that cater to different audiences such as children's art classes during summer break or adult workshops on painting techniques or printmaking methods. Our exhibitions feature works from local artists as well as national/international artists who have gained recognition for their exceptional talent.
In addition to supporting individual artists' growth through our programs/services mentioned above; we also collaborate with other organizations within Marin County (and beyond) on projects/initiatives aimed at promoting art/culture within communities where they live/work/play/etc.. For example: We partner with schools/colleges/universities/community centers/libraries/museums/galleries/etc., on events like "Art Walks," "Open Studios," "Artist Talks," etc..
We are proud of our accomplishments over the years but recognize there is still much work left undone when it comes down towards achieving our goals fully - which include expanding access/opportunities/resources available through partnerships/collaborations while maintaining affordability/accessibility/quality standards across all aspects related directly/indirectly towards supporting artistic expression & cultural diversity within Marin County (and beyond).
