The Anchorage Park Foundation: Building Healthy Parks and People
The Anchorage Park Foundation is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to building healthy parks and people by mobilizing public support and financial resources for parks, trails, and recreation opportunities. The foundation was established in 2004 with the aim of enhancing the quality of life in Anchorage, Alaska through the development of world-class parks.
The foundation's mission is to create a vibrant park system that provides residents with access to safe, clean, and well-maintained parks. The foundation believes that parks are essential for promoting physical activity, mental health, social interaction, environmental stewardship, economic development, and community pride.
To achieve its mission, the Anchorage Park Foundation works closely with local government agencies such as the Municipality of Anchorage Parks & Recreation Department. The foundation also collaborates with community groups such as Friends of Parks & Trails and corporate partners such as ConocoPhillips Alaska.
One of the key initiatives undertaken by the Anchorage Park Foundation is Project Playground. This project aims to build or renovate playgrounds in underserved neighborhoods throughout Anchorage. Since its inception in 2007, Project Playground has built or renovated over 20 playgrounds across the city.
Another major initiative undertaken by the foundation is Trailblazers. This program aims to develop new trails or improve existing ones throughout Anchorage. Trailblazers has been instrumental in creating over 50 miles of new trails since its inception in 2010.
In addition to these initiatives, the Anchorage Park Foundation also supports other programs such as Youth Employment in Parks (YEP), which provides job training opportunities for young people; Greening Youth Apprenticeship Program (GYAP), which trains young people on environmental conservation; and Community Garden Program (CGP), which promotes urban agriculture.
The success of these programs can be attributed to several factors including strong partnerships between public agencies and private organizations; community involvement and engagement; and a commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The Anchorage Park Foundation has received numerous awards and recognition for its work in building healthy parks and people. In 2019, the foundation was awarded the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management by the American Academy for Park & Recreation Administration (AAPRA) in partnership with the National Recreation & Park Association (NRPA).
