It was closed due to Covid, but the hill to the Pueblo was fantastic.
Super presentations/discussions/explanation of the Anasazi and related remains.
Wow! So much to see and learn about the ancient Pueblo culture. Well worth a stop.
A must see atraction about the indigenous people who lived in this area for over 800 years before the White Man ever set foot on North American soil!
I've visited Escalante Ruin before, but missed the visitors' center. This facility is amazing, well worth your time and attention. I'll be back-- not tomorrow, they're closed on Monday, but maybe Tuesday, before I have to leave Cortez.
Friendly helpful knowledgeable BLM staffers, superb exhibit
Great place to start, and see the relics, and speak with the ranger.
The visitors center and museum are closed but a 1/2 mile trail leads up to a pueblo and gives you a lot of information on native plants and how they are used. There is also an overlook of McPhee Reservoir. I think it would be nice if they also had a set of steps, shortening the trail to about a hundred yards. It was nice that they put out maps and someone had drawn a suggested route on it.
So many great artifacts and exhibits. A good value and the hike to see the views around you is nice.
A small example of ancient native residents. The museum is well worth the visit.
A big plus is that dogs are allowed. Not far from Mesa Verde.
I love the smell Museum it's a beautiful and trends very well kempt beautiful garden out front with labeled plants in the beds. The inside exhibits are very well. 5th grade explanation of their history and where we came from I'm done under active section that will keep children engaged there's also a short hike up a mildly sloped Hill to a Kiva also known as a pit house to go in Explorer. The area dates back to the late 1700s and there is also a great View McPhee reservoir from up there to be mindful if you take a pet on the path as the sidewalk can get very hot in that sun
Very interesting; well maintained path for short hike; great museum
This place deserves a revisit. Beautiful scenery and history. Very large area to discover. Lot of hiking trails. Birds and animals are abundant.
A very informative little museum. Also the headquarters for the canyons of the ancients national monument. A good place to start if you travel to the four corners region to learn about archeology.
Very interesting to learn more about the people that lived here long ago.
Awesome visitor center! Got in free with National Park Pass. Glad we stopped here before our trip to Mesa Verde.
Informative, entertaining, and fun.
lots of info here. The woman at the desk was nice and informative.
Empty when I went , the privacy was nice and added to the ambiance.
An unbelievable scenic drive with many hiking or biking areas if you want, we drove through miles of rock formations that we're breath taking.
Great place to learn about the history of this area.
Excellent museum with a lot of interactive exhibits for the kids. I would recommend stopping here before visiting the sites of the park because you have more information about your visit and exploration. The kids were able to participate in a scavenger hunt and they learned quite a bit! Anyone interested in history would love this museum. There are many artifacts and an excellent amount of information about the excavations of the past.
Awesome place to visit. A lot of info on the signs while walking the trail.
This is such a hidden gem. All the volunteers are friendly and provide you with a wealth of information. On Saturdays during the summer, there is a small presentation on similar archaeological sites found around the world. You can even hike to the top of the property to see Pueblo ruins. Much less crowded than the very popular Mesa Verde. Lots to see and do here.
The museum has a complete display of the Canyons of the Ancients history. Pottery, tools, even a model of the homes. There are detailed Maps of the area and the Pueblos migration south. There are alot of original artifacts and documented how they were found and by who... Very comprehensive view of life years ago....
Great exhibits and friendly people in the visitors center
Great place for a quick stop. Picnic tables and 1/2 mi paved trail to a great view. March still had snow on trail, so was a little tougher. We were short on time so may hit the museum next time.
Very informative and friendly staff. Great little gift shop too. Beautiful garden in the front and hummingbirds everywhere!
Lots of great information. We went with my students they were engaged the whole time and enjoyed the activities as well as learning about the people who had come before us.
Super interesting. Spent 2 hours there. Would have stayed longer but they had to close.
Lots of artifacts, art and history. Friendly helpful people.
While the canyons themselves are quite stunning visually, the visitors center focuses more on the previous inhabitants and what they have left behind. I did not find the exhibits to be particularly interesting, it was like going though an 800 year old dumpster and speculating about each item.
What a great learning experience staff was amazing and insightful and beyond friendly.
Small but with lots of history. Friendly helpful folks. Half mile walk to see the ruins.
Great visitors center. Learned so much. Awesome manager and personnel
A large collection of items on display that were obtained prior to the flooding of the numerous archaeological sites in the canyon turned reservoir, just below the museum. Impressive.
The Visiters Center has a very nice museum as well as two excavated Pueblos. One is right as you enter the Visiters Center, and the other is up a 1/2 mile paved path. The path is uphill all the way, but it is not too strenuous and makes for More
I was so happy to have spent time at the Heritage Visitors center. Jennifer Frost was extremely knowledgeable. I didn't realize how little I really knew about the deep history areas and people.
Great place and and a very nice young man named Cannon!
Big, innovatively designed, architecturally neat museum bringing together the information and artifacts of the Ancestral Puebloan peoples who lived in the area before the 1300s, part of Chaco culture and the folks who fled its implosion. A welcome addition to all the great sites in the neighborhood, Hovenweep, Mesa Verde, etc. Great to have it all pulled together in one site -- how humans dealt with the harsh, hostile but beautiful landscape of the southwest.
A must see if you're in the area. Try to get a backroom curation tour to really get the full experience.
Absolutely awesome. Kids had a great time here, and the ruins over McPhee was spectacular.
Worth the ride. We were on motorcycles and didn't know it was unpaved, but we made it and was worth it.
Awesome place to hike! Small group, large group or alone! Enjoy the cliff dwellings!
Friendly & very informative !.. By far the best artifact collection in this museum out of any I've been to in the four corners area, a must go!
It's a must to visit the visitor center before exploring the widely scattered ruins. The map they give you is the best way to find the various sites.
This was a great place to take the kids. Also very educational. Fee was only $3 per adult and no charge for kids. There is a short 1/2 mile hike that is handicap accessible.
Very informative and great interactive displays. Definitely worth the trip.
Very cool place with some awesome exhibits. Friendly staff who will provide you with a ton of information. A little off the beaten path but worth a visit.
Excellent Visitors Center! Very educational and informative! I would highly recommend!
The 1st time here we only had 30 min until close, so we came back the next time we were in the area. The museum has a lot of pictures, information, pottery and other remnants to learn more about this area. Staff are helpful and friendly, would recommend stopping by if you have time!
Great place to stop before you explore canyon of the ancients. Very nice staff. Awesome collection of artifacts and great history of the area
A must stop!
Awesome view of the reservoir and a great little pueblo on top! Easy 1/2 mile concrete trail to the top.
Really hard to find anything, not well marked at all. I was sad.
The museum here is very fascinating. Did not have time to do the scenic loop drive, but I will be returning in the future because I think I definitely want to spend a couple days exploring all this park has to offer!
The museum was great so much to see and learn the history of the ancient people's. The staff was incredibly informative and helpful.
Great visit, informative, educational and simply spectacular! Do not miss a visit to LOWERE PUEBLO, wonderful.
