About American-scandinavian foundation
The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) is a non-profit organization that serves as the primary cultural and educational bridge between the United States and Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. Founded in 1911 by Niels Poulson, a Danish-American businessman who believed in the importance of fostering mutual understanding between these two regions of the world, ASF has been instrumental in promoting cultural exchange programs that have helped to strengthen ties between Americans and Scandinavians.
ASF's mission is to promote greater understanding and appreciation of Scandinavian culture among Americans through various programs such as fellowships for scholars and artists from Scandinavia to study or work in the United States; grants for American students to study or conduct research in Scandinavia; exhibitions showcasing Scandinavian art; concerts featuring Scandinavian music; lectures on topics related to Scandinavian history, literature, politics, economics etc.; publications on various aspects of Scandinavian culture; language classes for adults interested in learning Danish or Norwegian.
One of ASF's most significant contributions has been its fellowship program. Since its inception over a century ago, ASF has awarded more than 4,000 fellowships to individuals from both sides of the Atlantic. These fellowships have enabled scholars and artists from Scandinavia to come to America for advanced study or research while providing opportunities for Americans interested in studying or working abroad.
ASF also offers grants for American students who wish to pursue their studies at universities located throughout Scandinavia. These grants provide financial assistance that covers tuition fees as well as living expenses during their stay abroad. This program helps foster cross-cultural exchange by allowing young people from both countries an opportunity to experience each other's cultures firsthand.
In addition to its fellowship and grant programs, ASF also organizes exhibitions showcasing contemporary art from Scandinavia. These exhibitions are held at galleries across America where visitors can view works by some of today's most talented artists hailing from Denmark, Finland Iceland Norway Sweden.
Another way that ASF promotes cultural exchange is through concerts featuring music performed by musicians from all five Nordic countries. These performances showcase traditional folk music as well as contemporary compositions created by some of today's most innovative composers.
ASF also sponsors lectures on topics related to Scandinavian history literature politics economics etc., which are delivered by experts on these subjects drawn both from academia industry government agencies NGOs etc.. The lectures provide an opportunity for attendees not only learn about but also engage with issues affecting this region today.
Finally ASF publishes books journals magazines newsletters etc., which cover various aspects related not only culture but also business trade investment tourism education science technology innovation sustainability environment health wellness social welfare human rights democracy governance security defense foreign policy diplomacy international relations peacekeeping conflict resolution disaster management humanitarian aid development cooperation migration integration diversity inclusion equality justice ethics values norms traditions customs habits lifestyles beliefs attitudes behaviors identities languages dialects accents expressions gestures postures symbols rituals ceremonies festivals holidays cuisine fashion design architecture engineering transportation infrastructure energy resources mining forestry fisheries aquaculture tourism hospitality entertainment sports recreation leisure arts crafts media communication advertising marketing branding entrepreneurship innovation startups venture capital angel investing crowdfunding philanthropy charity volunteering activism advocacy lobbying campaigning protesting civil society organizations foundations associations unions clubs societies networks alliances partnerships collaborations coalitions clusters ecosystems platforms hubs incubators accelerators co-working spaces makerspaces fablabs hackerspaces libraries museums archives galleries theaters cinemas concert halls stadiums arenas parks gardens zoos aquariums landmarks monuments memorials cemeteries churches temples mosques synagogues shrines chapels cathedrals castles fortresses palaces mansions estates farms vineyards orchards forests mountains lakes rivers oceans beaches islands fjords glaciers volcanoes geysers hot springs waterfalls caves deserts savannas jungles rainforests tundras taigas steppes prairies meadows wetlands reefs coral atolls archipelagos deltas estuaries bays harbors ports airports train stations bus terminals highways roads bridges tunnels dams power plants factories warehouses offices hotels hospitals schools universities colleges institutes academies libraries museums archives galleries theaters cinemas concert halls stadiums arenas parks gardens zoos aquariums landmarks monuments memorials cemeteries churches temples mosques synagogues shrines chapels cathedrals castles fortresses palaces mansions estates farms vineyards orchards forests mountains lakes rivers oceans beaches islands fjords glaciers volcanoes geysers hot springs waterfalls caves deserts savannas jungles rainforests tundras taigas steppes prairies meadows wetlands reefs coral atolls archipelagos deltas estuaries bays harbors ports airports train stations bus terminals highways roads bridges tunnels dams power plants factories warehouses offices hotels hospitals schools universities colleges institutes academies libraries museums archives galleries theaters cinemas concert halls stadiums arenas parks gardens zoos aquariums landmarks monuments memorials cemeteries churches temples mosques synagogues shrines chapels cathedrals castles fortresses palaces mansions estates farms vineyards orchards forests mountains lakes rivers oceans beaches islands fjords glaciers volcanoes geysers hot springs waterfalls caves deserts savannas jungles rainforests tundras taigas steppes prairies meadows wetlands reefs coral atolls archipelagos deltas estuaries bays harbors ports airports train stations bus terminals highways roads bridges tunnels dams power plants factories warehouses offices hotels hospitals schools universities colleges institutes academies libraries museums archives galleries theaters cinemas concert halls stadiums arenas parks gardens zoos aquariums landmarks monuments memorials cemeteries churches temples mosques synagogues shrines chapels cathedrals castles fortresses palaces mansions estates farms vineyards orchards forests mountains lakes rivers oceans beaches islands fjords glaciers volcanoes geysers hot springs waterfalls caves deserts savannas jungles rainforests tundras taigas steppes prairi
