American Legion Jersey Boys State: A Life-Changing Experience for Young Men
American Legion Jersey Boys State is a unique and life-changing experience that has been providing young men from around the state of New Jersey with an opportunity to learn about American citizenship since 1946. This hands-on college level seminar is designed to educate our youth in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship.
The program is held annually and attracts over 1,000 young men each year. It provides them with an opportunity to learn about government, politics, leadership and public speaking. The program also helps them develop their critical thinking skills and encourages them to become active members of their communities.
The American Legion Jersey Boys State program is open to high school juniors who have demonstrated leadership qualities in their schools or communities. The selection process involves a rigorous application process that includes essays, interviews and recommendations from teachers or community leaders.
Once selected for the program, participants are divided into two political parties – Nationalists and Federalists – which are then further divided into cities. Each city has its own elected officials including mayor, council members and other positions such as police chief or fire chief.
Throughout the week-long program, participants engage in a variety of activities including mock elections at all levels of government – local, county and state – as well as debates on current issues facing our country. They also attend lectures by prominent speakers on topics such as law enforcement, military service or public service careers.
One of the highlights of the American Legion Jersey Boys State program is its emphasis on community service. Participants are required to complete at least one community service project during their time at the seminar which can range from volunteering at a local food bank or homeless shelter to organizing a blood drive or fundraising event for charity.
The benefits of participating in this program are numerous. Not only does it provide young men with an opportunity to learn about American citizenship but it also helps them develop important skills such as leadership, public speaking and critical thinking. It also encourages them to become active members of their communities and to consider careers in public service.
In addition, the American Legion Jersey Boys State program provides participants with an opportunity to meet other young men from around the state who share similar interests and goals. Many participants form lifelong friendships during their time at the seminar.
Overall, the American Legion Jersey Boys State program is a once in a lifetime experience that has been changing lives for over 75 years. It provides young men with an opportunity to learn about American citizenship, develop important skills and make lifelong connections with others who share their passion for public service.
