History
Alvin Ailey was born in Texas in 1931 and grew up during a time when racial segregation was still prevalent in many parts of America. Despite facing discrimination throughout his life, he pursued his passion for dance with unwavering determination. In 1953, he joined Lester Horton's dance company in Los Angeles where he honed his skills as a performer and choreographer.
In 1958, Alvin Ailey founded his own dance company with a group of like-minded artists who shared his vision for bringing African-American culture to mainstream audiences. The first performance took place at New York's 92nd Street Y on March 30th, 1958. The program included three works by Alvin Ailey: "Blues Suite," "Revelations," and "Journey."
"Revelations" quickly became one of the signature works of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Set to traditional spirituals sung by live performers on stage, it tells the story of African-American faith and resilience through movement that is both joyful and poignant.
