Alice Austen was born in 1866 in Staten Island to a wealthy family. She developed an early interest in photography and began taking pictures at the age of ten. Over time, she became one of America's most prolific photographers, capturing images that documented everyday life in New York City during the late 19th century and early 20th century.
Austen's photographs are notable for their technical skill as well as their social significance. She was one of the first American women to use photography as a means of artistic expression and social commentary. Her images often depicted working-class people, immigrants, women's suffrage activists, and other marginalized groups who were largely ignored by mainstream society.
Today, The Alice Austen House Museum preserves over 7,000 original prints from her collection along with her cameras and other photographic equipment. Visitors can explore these artifacts through guided tours or self-guided visits.
One highlight is The Clear Comfort Garden which has been restored to its original design based on historical records from when it was created by Alice’s mother around 1895-1900s. It features beautiful flowers such as roses which were popular during that era along with herbs used for cooking or medicinal purposes.
