About Acton wakefield watersheds alliance

Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance (AWWA) is a non-profit organization that is committed to protecting and restoring the water quality of the waters of Wakefield, NH and the border region of Acton, ME. The organization was founded in 1997 by a group of concerned citizens who recognized the need for a coordinated effort to address water quality issues in their community.

AWWA's mission is to promote responsible stewardship of our natural resources through education, advocacy, and community involvement. The organization works closely with local residents, businesses, government agencies, and other organizations to develop effective strategies for protecting and improving water quality in the region.

One of AWWA's primary goals is to reduce pollution from non-point sources such as stormwater runoff. This type of pollution occurs when rainwater or snowmelt flows over land surfaces and picks up pollutants such as fertilizers, pesticides, oil and grease from roads and parking lots, pet waste from yards and parks, sediment from construction sites or eroding stream banks. Non-point source pollution can have serious impacts on aquatic ecosystems by degrading water quality which can lead to fish kills or harmful algal blooms.

To address this issue AWWA has implemented several programs aimed at reducing non-point source pollution including public education campaigns about proper disposal methods for household hazardous waste materials like paint thinner or motor oil; installation of rain gardens which capture stormwater runoff before it enters streams or lakes; implementation of best management practices on farms that reduce nutrient runoff into nearby streams; promotion of low-impact development techniques that minimize impervious surfaces like pavement which increase stormwater runoff rates.

Another important aspect of AWWA's work is monitoring water quality in local streams and lakes. The organization collects data on various parameters such as dissolved oxygen levels pH levels temperature conductivity turbidity bacteria counts etc., which are indicators used to assess overall health conditions within aquatic ecosystems. This information helps identify areas where improvements are needed and provides a baseline for tracking progress over time.

AWWA also works to restore degraded streams and wetlands through various restoration projects. These projects involve removing invasive species, planting native vegetation, stabilizing stream banks with natural materials like logs or boulders, and creating habitat for fish and wildlife. Restoration efforts not only improve water quality but also provide recreational opportunities for local residents such as fishing or kayaking.

In addition to its environmental work AWWA is also involved in community outreach programs that promote public awareness about the importance of protecting our natural resources. The organization hosts events such as river cleanups, educational workshops on topics like composting or rainwater harvesting, and participates in local fairs or festivals where they can engage with the public about their mission.

Overall Acton Wakefield Watersheds Alliance is an important organization that plays a critical role in protecting and restoring the water quality of the waters of Wakefield NH and Acton ME. Through its various programs AWWA has made significant strides towards reducing non-point source pollution improving water quality monitoring aquatic ecosystems restoring degraded streams wetlands educating the public about responsible stewardship practices.
