Activity Alliance: Making Active Lives Possible
Activity Alliance, previously known as the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS), is a UK-based charity that is dedicated to making active lives possible for everyone. The organization believes that everyone should have the opportunity to participate in physical activity and sports, regardless of their age, ability or background.
The charity was founded in 1998 with the aim of promoting and supporting disability sport across England. Over the years, it has grown into a leading voice for inclusive physical activity and sports. Today, Activity Alliance works with a wide range of partners including national governing bodies of sport, local authorities, schools and community organizations to create more opportunities for disabled people to get active.
At Activity Alliance, we believe that being physically active is essential for good health and wellbeing. It can help improve mental health, reduce stress levels and boost self-esteem. However, many disabled people face barriers when it comes to accessing physical activity opportunities. This could be due to lack of accessible facilities or equipment or simply because they do not feel welcome in mainstream activities.
Our mission at Activity Alliance is to break down these barriers by working with our partners to create more inclusive environments where everyone feels welcome and supported. We provide training and resources for coaches and instructors so they can adapt their sessions to meet the needs of all participants.
We also work closely with schools to promote inclusive PE lessons where all children can take part regardless of their ability level. Our Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) supports leisure centers across the country in becoming more accessible so that disabled people can enjoy exercise alongside non-disabled peers.
One key area where we are making a real difference is through our engagement work with disabled people themselves. We believe that involving disabled people in decision-making processes around physical activity provision is essential if we are going to create truly inclusive environments.
Through our research projects such as ‘Talk To Me’, we gather feedback from disabled people about what they want from physical activity opportunities. This helps us to shape our work and ensure that we are meeting the needs of the people we serve.
At Activity Alliance, we are proud of what we have achieved so far but there is still much more to do. We know that there are many disabled people who would like to be more active but face barriers in doing so. That’s why we will continue to work tirelessly with our partners to create a world where everyone can enjoy the benefits of physical activity and sports.
