Acid Survivors Trust International (ASTI) is a UK registered not-for-profit charity that has been working tirelessly to end acid violence at a global level. In 2002, Bangladesh passed its first Acid Control Act which made it illegal to carry or possess corrosive substances without valid reasons. Since then there have been further amendments strengthening this law.
Another area where ASTI has made significant progress is in providing support services for survivors. Through partnerships with local organizations around the world including India , Nepal , Cambodia , Uganda , Pakistan , Colombia etc., ASTI provides medical treatment (including surgeries), psychosocial counseling (to help survivors cope with trauma), vocational training (to help them regain their independence) and legal aid (to help them seek justice).
ASTI's work has not gone unnoticed. The organization has received numerous awards and accolades for its efforts to end acid violence. In 2015, ASTI was awarded the prestigious Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation in recognition of its "outstanding contribution to the eradication of acid attacks worldwide". Other notable awards include the Clinton Global Citizen Award, the Skoll Foundation Social Entrepreneurship Award, and the World Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (WANGO) Humanitarian Service Award.
