Aashe: Empowering Higher Education Sustainability Professionals

Aashe is a community of higher education sustainability professionals that aims to empower individuals and institutions to lead the global sustainability movement. Founded in 2006, Aashe has grown into one of the most influential organizations in the field of sustainability. Its members include colleges and universities from around the world as well as businesses, non-profits, and government agencies that share its commitment to sustainability.

At the heart of Aashe's mission is the belief that higher education has a unique role to play in advancing sustainability. As centers of learning and research, colleges and universities have an opportunity to model sustainable practices on their campuses while also educating students about environmental issues.

To achieve this goal, Aashe offers a wide range of resources for its members. These include webinars on topics such as renewable energy procurement and waste reduction strategies; online courses on subjects like green building design; toolkits for implementing sustainable practices on campus; and access to an extensive network of sustainability professionals.

One key resource offered by Aashe is its Sustainability Tracking Assessment & Rating System (STARS). This comprehensive framework allows institutions to measure their progress towards sustainability goals across multiple areas including academics, operations, engagement with local communities, and more. By participating in STARS assessments every three years or so (depending upon membership level), institutions can benchmark themselves against others in their sector while also identifying areas where they can improve.

Another important aspect of Aashe's work is advocacy at both the state and federal levels. The organization works closely with policymakers to promote policies that support sustainable practices while also advocating for increased funding for research into renewable energy technologies.

In addition to these resources aimed at institutional members,AASHE also offers individual memberships which provide access all member benefits except STARS reporting tools.AASHE’s individual membership program provides access all member benefits except STARS reporting tools.Membership fees vary depending upon institution size but start at $250 per year for small schools or non-profit organizations with less than 2 full-time employees working directly on campus-wide sustainability initiatives.The fee increases based upon institution size up-to $5k per year depending upon number full-time employees working directly on campus-wide sustainability initiatives.
