Founded in 1987 as Apogee Software by Scott Miller and George Broussard, the company quickly gained popularity with its shareware model of distribution. This allowed gamers to try out a portion of the game before purchasing it. This innovative approach helped Apogee Software become one of the leading game developers of its time.
In 1994, Apogee Software changed its name to 3D Realms to reflect its focus on creating cutting-edge games with advanced graphics technology. The company continued to push boundaries with each new release and became known for its high-quality games that were both entertaining and challenging.
One of 3D Realms' most popular franchises is Duke Nukem. The first game was released in 1991 and quickly became a hit due to its irreverent humor and over-the-top action. Duke Nukem Forever was released in 2011 after years of development hell but failed to live up to expectations due to numerous delays.
Another successful franchise from 3D Realms is Max Payne. Released in 2001, Max Payne revolutionized third-person shooters with its cinematic storytelling style and bullet-time gameplay mechanics. It spawned two sequels that were equally well-received by critics and fans alike.
Commander Keen was another popular franchise from the early days of Apogee Software/3D Realms. It featured a young boy named Billy Blaze who donned his brother's football helmet to become Commander Keen - an intergalactic hero who fought against evil aliens trying to conquer Earth.
