On 11/23/2018 around 8pm MST last night, my mother went into the Emergency Room after checking her blood pressure at the store and finding that it was 175/97. When she arrived at the ER, they checked her BP and it was 235/108. I have worked in health care for 5+ years and am currently in nursing school and know this to be an extremely dangerous number and that a hemorrhagic stroke could have easily occurred here. After taking her BP she waited in the waiting room for 15-20 minutes, before an ECG was conducted. After the ECG was performed, they placed her back in the waiting room and we waited another 15-30 minutes and then they called her back and started an IV and rechecked her BP. At this time, the EMT told her who her nurse and PA would be and then she waited another 15-20 minutes to be seen and have blood work completed. During her couple hour stay there, she received no IV fluids or medications. They discharged her after a few hours, after her BP reached 140/77.

I am not concerned about her waiting after the ECG was performed, but I am EXTREMELY disappointed in the staff that any patient waited 15-20 minutes alone before any ECG was conducted, after a BP of 235/108. I'm not sure if compassion fatigue was the issue here or if everyone in the ED was having an off-night, but that off-night could have costed me my mother, a woman who is an avid athlete and does not have health problems. She is 66 years old and this is elder abuse. I will be reporting this further.
