For the past 35 years, every few years I would stay at Park Royal when in Penang. But seems like the charm and idyllic place to rest and unwind has been lost since the renovation. The pool has lost all "resort style" appeal, the coconut tress are too tall to provide shade.

It took more than 30 minutes to check in. We were asked to wait while being served our welcome drink. But to wait 30 minutes after a long drive from KL. After my second time querying the long wait did I finally get the keys to the room.

As I entered the room, I was greeted by a dead and thoroughly dried up cockcroach at the entrance door floor.

The light switches are a mess. The room DO Not Disturb switch is next to all the light switches and the first thing one does when entering a dark room is to switch on everything and inadvertently triggering the Privacy DO NOT Disturb sign outside your door. So no room cleaning was done the next day and the dead cockcroach was still there when we left.

The "master" switch next to the bed also switch off the light in the bathroom and cannot be switched on at the bathroom. When I had to use the bathroom in the midlle of the night, had to try out every switch to find out which one finally switched on the bathroom lights. Inadvertently all the rooms lights were switched on and my wife was awaken from her deep sleep. What were they thinking off? This has to be the worst room lighting in all the hotels I have stayed in.
