The Roman Baths date back about 2,000 years. Built as a sort of religious temple and place to cleanse and take in the thermal effects of the nearby natural springs. They Roman Baths were buried and forgotten for quite some time. They were rediscovered in 1878 by the then mayor of the city. He made it his goal to unearth this treasure and share it with the world. The Roman Baths opened to the public in 1897.
The baths are open all year round and host everything from holiday markets to music events. Unfortunately, the public is no longer to use the Roman Baths for actual bathing, but there is a modern day bath spa nearby that can easily accommodate that need.
The Roman Baths are one of the most popular UK tourist destinations, attracting over a million visitors per year. Plan on spending a few hours touring the space and consider dining at the cool restaurant. You can get to the Roman Baths in 90 minutes by catching the train at London's Paddington Station.
