the museum has one of the three largest collections of modern and contemporary art in the world, with the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Modern in London, and the first in Europe with 100,313 works from 6 396 artists on January 1, 2014. The National Center for Art and Culture Georges Pompidou, familiarly called "Beaubourg" was born of the desire of Georges Pompidou (great lover of modern art), then President of the French Republic, to create in the heart of Paris an institution an original cultural center entirely devoted to modern and contemporary creation, where visual arts would be side by side with books, design, music and cinema.
