I enjoyed the train ride and the scenery along the way, and would do it again for that. What I wasn't impressed with was the food service. I had a gold star ticket, meaning you rode in the nicer cars, got 2 free alcoholic drinks, unlimited non-alcoholic drinks and meal service included in the price. I was taking the train from Anchorage to Talkeetna, while it seemed most of the passengers were either going to Denali or Fairbanks. They started at the front of the car to take people down for breakfast, and since I was in row 17, that meant that I would be served dead last. I asked the waiter who took you down to the dining car if I would get to eat before we got to Talkeetna, he assured me I would. I noticed that they weren't moving people along very quickly and it was taking forever, so I asked again, reminding him that I was getting off at Talkeetna. He said I should be fine.

The train was supposed to arrive at Talkeetna at 11:15. At 11:00 they finally took me down and seated me at a table. At 11:05 they finally took my order, at 11:12 they finally brought me my meal, I had 3 whole minutes to eat it. When you're traveling first class you don't expect that kind of an experience. The train needs to seriously re-prioritize who they allow to eat first, it should be the passengers who have to get off first, the ones who are staying on can eat whenever. If they can't figure out this simple principle they have no right charging first class prices for rushed, sloppy service. Alaska Railroad you can and should do better, please correct this mistake!
