I have used the Seattle VA Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) unit for about five years. My local VA facility is Portland VA. The Seattle SCI unit is the best I've encountered since my accident in 1982. It may not have some of the finer amenities found in some private hospitals, but the employees in SCI truly care for the patients (both on a professional and a personal way). This shows in the individualized care each and every patient receives. The staff is attuned to each patient's medical issues resulting from their SCI. The staff addresses each issue as if it were the only challenge they have at that time. The collectively and individually deserve Kudos!
I recently learned that there was a change of supervisors in the SCI unit and this has caused more than one-half dozen to leave with more contemplating a change of jobs. This is a shame! I know from professional experience that times like this are difficult for all. The new supervisor wants to make herself known and all people resist change. Working in this environment is a challenge for all. Perhaps each side would benefit from a more transparent approach. Let's hope that cooler heads prevail and this is quickly and satisfactorily resolved. It would be a true shame if this atmosphere ruins a GREAT SCI clinic.
