Nice modern airport. Passport control was efficient at 0345 in the morning. However, I had a bicycle as checked baggage and it was VERY slow being brought to the baggage claim area. Most every international I've been to has a station to receive oversized baggage that is attended and usually has a conveyor belt. At BJS, there is a small square marked by tape on the floor near the baggage carousel that is supposed to be the drop off. I had to wait over an hour for my bike. Even with asking people in the baggage area, no one was able to assist with getting it any sooner.
Departing at 12 midnight was very easy. There was no line at the ticket counter. Everything was done very efficiently and quickly although one or two more people working the line at passport control would've been appreciated.
You must take a train for a few minutes on arrival and departure so plan on it taking an additional 10 minutes to even get to the duty free shopping area from where you leave passport control.
Proximity to the city by car, again, off peak traffic hours, was 15 minutes and very easy.
This airport doesn't have the personality that Hong Kong or Bangkok or to a lesser degree even Tokyo, but maybe that was because of the times when I was arriving/departing. Besides a couple of glitches, it was very adequate.
