Adam Cresser Review of The York Dungeon, Merlin Enter...
Absolutely vital visit if you are into the macabre...
Absolutely vital visit if you are into the macabre. If you have visited any of the other dungeons in the UK the basic format will be familiar but the experience itself is truly unique. If you haven't visited a similar attraction before to summarise you are essentially being lead around different rooms by talented actors and actresses into different vignettes that combine a bit of history with live action, special effects and gore. I don't want to spoil any of the surprises so I won't provide further details but I will say as a bit of a horror fan it doesn't disappoint. There was a new addition since my last visit which was easily the spookiest dungeon element I have ever seen. There is a strong element of black humour throughout which is entertaining and also serves to diffuse the tension. Baring in mind you will spend around an hour in this sinister world they have created it is not recommended for anyone who is in any way claustrophobic or of a nervous disposition.
In addition there is a rather nice albeit small replica tavern you can have a drink in afterwards with alcoholic and hot and cold soft drinks and snacks on offer.
There is also a gift shop with suitably gruesome souvenirs to take home.
The best souvenir in my opinion are the photo gifts based on snaps taken of you or your party at the start of the journey. Remember to really go for it with your facial expressions when having your photo taken as this makes the end results much funnier. It's a great way to bring I personalised and unique gift back for family or friends.
Both acting and regular staff were great throughout.
