I noticed that nightly rates were lower than usual...

I noticed that nightly rates were lower than usual, across the board, for NYC hotels the week before Christmas, so I did some research on the best high end properties. New York Palace was up near the top and the price was under my company fare cap. The Palace has a very traditional, midtown East feel, but not at the scale of the Waldorf. The staff was fine, but I didn't feel they went out of the way to be friendly. The room was very large, the bed was neither here nor there and my room had a great shower. The E was nearby, which was convenient to get to my office in Chelsea Market. Views of St. Pat's were very beautiful and even inspired me to go to morning mass one day. Not much around this area, by way of fun restaurants, but I really enjoyed Geoffrey Zakarian's new restaurant, The National. Not at the top of my list for a return visit, but mostly because it just isn't my style or favorite neighborhood. But, if you plan to spend a lot of time in midtown, or you just like a traditional hotel, I would definitely recommend the Palace.
