Review of Utopia
248 Marsh Hill Road
McHenry, Maryland
October 16-21, 2018
On April 3, 2018, I booked a reservation with Taylor-Made for a townhouse with an arrival date of October 16, 2018. Upon booking this reservation, I received numerous emails prior to my arrival updating me on my reservation, making charges to my credit card, and offering information regarding things to do in the area. When members of my family arrived at the unit on the day of check in at 4:01 PM, they were shocked to find that the place had not been cleaned. There were dirty sheets and bath towels in the bedrooms and bathrooms, and the kitchen was a mess. I called the Taylor-Made office immediately, and they said they would send someone to clean. Two ladies arrived and attempted to clean this 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom house in one hour. My family awkwardly waited for them to clean, as they had nowhere to go, and were exhausted from traveling all day to make the 4 PM check in. They also found to their dismay, a swarm of bees in the master bedroom. This was pointed out to them initially by the cleaning ladies. They called to have someone come and spray for the bees, and again, they were inconvenienced. Someone from Taylor-Made was supposed to contact them the following day to make sure everything had been taken care of, but that never happened. Although I had not yet arrived at the unit, I called Taylor-Made the next day to follow up and make sure there had been a resolution to these problems, and was told I should speak with "Chris", but that she was unavailable. I stated that I would call her again at 3 PM and in addition, I left a voicemail for her stating the same. When I called back, I was told that she was "very busy" and that she would be leaving at 3:30. Needless to say, I did not speak with her that day. When I arrived at the townhouse, I found the place was not what I had expected as per the website pictures and descriptions. The website advertised a king size bed and 2 queen beds; however, there was only one queen bed and one full size bed, in addition to the king. The place looked outdated and well used. There were marks on the walls, and significant stains on the carpet in the master bedroom. There was exposed wiring in the laundry area downstairs. AND the bees remained! I made a trip to the Taylor-Made office, where I found the staff members busily decorating their new state of the art office building, which may explain why the place I rented was not ready for my arrival. I was finally able to speak with Chris. She listened as I explained, in a very respectful and professional manner, how very disappointed I was. However, she was initially unwilling to make any accommodations for our inconvenience. Eventually, she agreed to refund me in the amount of $100.00. I have not yet received any type of refund, and am not sure how that will take place.
I most likely would not have taken time to write this review if the office staff at Taylor-Made had shown even the slightest bit of concern for our situation. They were very matter of fact, and did only the minimal necessary to take care of their negligence. We live in a resort area of Florida, and have a true understanding and appreciation of the importance of tourism, especially in an area such as Deep Creek Lake. In my area, we look forward to providing a destination for families to enjoy, and return to time and time again. AND, despite this unfortunate circumstance with Taylor-Made, we will most likely return to Deep Creek Lake at some time in the future; as we have indeed had many wonderful times there in the past. It is my hope that Taylor-Made will take time to reflect on my review, and quite possibly seek ways to improve their customer service, in hopes of making all visitors feel that their vacation enjoyment is a top priority to the folks at Taylor-Made.
