Bittersweet review. This review is for last February. I was one of the lucky chosen few to score tickets to the memorial of one of my childhood idols, Kobe Bryant. So some friends and I made the drive down from the Bay Area to pay homage.
Walking up to STAPLES was a sight to behold. STAPLES and the surrounding areas were all blocked off from the public. There were police and security everywhere, several metal detectors, and they checked our tickets several times. No one who wasn't supposed to be there was getting in for sure! All the while, the media was everywhere, and there were a lot of helicopters above the arena.
On to the memorial. The mood was electric, but somber, if that makes sense. We were each given a pin, t-shirt, and program as we walked in. The speaker list was kept secret, so we didn't know what to expect. It started off with some videos of Kobe and Gianna, and the tears already started to form. We went on to hear from Vanessa Bryant, Shaq, and others. My personal favorite speech was from Michael Jordan. And as far as Vanessa goes, she delivered an amazing eulogy, and it was remarkable that she was able to keep it together.
All in all, this was an amazing event that went off without a hitch. The planning and organization was impeccable. I feel so fortunate to have won tickets, and this was an event that I'll remember for the rest of my life.
