Horrible customer service! I have been lied to by all levels of employees. I bought 4 brand new Kumho tires, for my work truck (rated for 70,000 miles) on July 31, 2018, and on June 6, 2019 I had a blowout on one of my tires. On Saturday, June 8 I brought my truck in and left it there so they could put on a new tire. I receive a call a couple of hours later saying they have the tire, in stock, and it will be $174. I ask if that's the prorated cost because I knew I had only put about 20,000 miles on the tire before it blew. He tells me no because I didn't purchase the road hazard warranty. I tell him they are rated for 70,000 miles, so they should still be under the manufacturer's warranty. To which he replies, while I hear him pressing random keys on the keyboard, "no there is no manufacturer's warranty".(Lie #1) I tell him not to do anything to the truck. I go to Kumho's website and sure enough the tire is covered under the manufacturer's warranty. The website gives me a chart to tell what percentage of the cost of the tire is covered. Kumho's website says my ONLY OBLIGATION is to bring the tire to an authorized Kumho Tire dealer which Pep Boys is one. So I go back to the store and ask what is the tread depth on my tire. He says he can let me know and proceeds to walk out to my truck and measure the depth. HE NEVER CHECKED IT BEFORE TELLING ME THE MANUFACTURER DIDN'T HAVE A WARRANTY. After he measures the tire he turns to me and says because I only lost 3/32nds of an inch they should cover 100% of the tire. He knew the percentage off the top of his head, but yet he didn't know about the manufacturer's warranty? Okay, 100%, finally I'm getting some satisfaction. I say, "Good, so I'll just leave it and come back when it's ready". He says, "Oh no, that's a manufacturer's warranty they have to cover it, so you'll have to take that up with Kumho".(Lie #2) I explain the whole "only obligation" thing to him and he gets his manager. The manager tells me they are going to have to ship the tire to Kumho in order for them to replace it.(Lie #3) I tell him fine do whatever you have to do. He says he'll call me on Monday or Tuesday and give me an update.(Lie #4) On Tuesday I call Kumho and they tell me, "Oh, no, they don't have to ship the tire back in order for me to get a replacement tire. Pep Boys handles the manufacturer's warranty in house". I go back Wednesday and inform the employee of my conversation with Kumho. He says I have to wait for the manager to come in to work. I ask what time will that be and he tells me he's going to call and find out. He calls the manager a couple of minutes before 10am. Manager says he'll be there in 20mins.(Lie #5) The manager arrives at 11:10am, 50 mins longer than the time I was told. The manager says Kumho has to cover it, Kumho says Pep Boys has to pay because that's how they get the tires "so cheap". Manager says he can't do anything because he can't give me a tire because he needs a "paper trail". I leave fuming. I call "customer service" and file a complaint. They tell me the area manager will call me within 3 business days.(Lie #6) This is at 12pm on Wednesday, so he has till Monday at 12pm to call me. Never calls. I call back on Monday and they escalate the complaint. Now they say the regional manager will call me in the next 24 hours.(Lie #7). Never calls. I call back today, Tuesday, which is 9 days after I brought the truck in and tell them I need this taken care of because it's for my work truck and if I get another flat I'll lose a whole day's work. The woman on the phone makes a note and says there is nothing more she could do because the area and regional manager kicked it back to the store manager, WHO CAN'T DO ANYTHING TO SOLVE MY PROBLEM.
I find it absolutely dumbfounding that Pep Boys has no protocol on handling a manufacturer's warranty.
So, now I will be calling Pep Boys Corporate tomorrow morning but I have zero confidence that anything will come of it.
I'm 48 years old and I have never come across worse customer service than at Pep Boys.
