It was founded in 1866 AD, an independent private company whose goal is to establish the nucleus of a university in Lebanon, provided that it is a non-sectarian institution. At that time, it was called the Syrian Protestant College. It was founded by Daniel Bliss [2], an American missionary born in 1823, and appointed to it as its first president. In his appreciation, the street adjacent to the university wall was named after him, Bliss Hall, and one of the university's main buildings was named Bliss Hall.
