My wife and I joined UCCU in 1993 and kept our accounts active, and accumulated a significant savings balance with them over more than 15 years. I'm sure we were quite profitable for them. Since the end of 2009 we have maintained our membership by keeping a small balance in our savings account. Earlier this year they started charging $5 a month for inactive accounts that were below a certain balance threshold. When we noticed the charges and asked UCCU to reverse them, they acted like they were doing us a favor by reversing some, but not all, of them. Even with the reversals, the effective savings rate on our account dropped from 0.01% to -60%. We have closed our accounts, have no plans to use UCCU again, and recommend others stay away as well.
By the way, the tellers in the Highland branch and most of the customer service representatives (on the telephone) are extremely friendly and helpful. Management is not.
