Awful what has happened to Underground Atlanta. I came to a Braves game as a kid... like in '92 and remembered Underground Atlanta as essentially the premier tourist attraction in the city. Lots of activity, good shopping, activities, etc. Now as an adult, I just got back from a trip to explore the city at the end of September 2013.... and WOW, my how things have changed! Underground Atlanta is now a combination of a ghost town and a scene from "The Walking Dead".

My wife had planned an awesome trip the city including some must see attractions such as Midtown, Buckhead, Piedmont Park, Centennial Olympic Park, etc. (must visit places in the city). And even though hardly a mention of it showed up in any of her guidebooks, I insisted we go check out Underground because of my prior experience as a kid.

Virtually everyone we came across was extremely shady, appeared on drugs, old dudes with no shirts on stumbling around, people mumbling disrespectful comments, worn and abandoned visitor's center... not pretty. The retail mall was open but there was literally not one person inside when we walked through.

My wife couldn't get out of there quickly enough and I couldn't blame her. Not a good place to visit, not a good place for kids. I really hope Atlanta can do something to turn the area around, but for now, it is not even close to being worth a visit.
