EDIT: Not sure if Vicky R is referring to my post, but yes, my grandpa could say a few words while he was on the ventilator. He would mouth words, nod his head, and say small sentences. I am a real person, not paid or an employee, and just wanted to share my experience with others. I added some pictures to show how he progressed from the time he was there to him at home.

I cannot express how thankful I am to the doctors, nurses, and social worker who have helped my grandpa through this difficult journey.

Background info: He first got sick with COVID back in mid-January. He spent a month and a half in the first hospital then was transferred to a nursing home that didn t treat him well. We had many issues with that nursing home and my grandpa was taken to the hospital for the 3rd time where they recommended Columbus hospital. I was contacted by the Liasion, Amelia, and she reassured me that they had a strong respiratory department and said transportation would be provided (since I live in the Bronx, ny).

My grandpa was admitted to Columbus hospital on 5/7/21 with a trach tube and was connected to a ventilator. After the first few days, we asked him if he liked it there and he said it s much better than the previous nursing home he was in, so we were happy with that. Also, we noticed how attentive and kind the nurses and therapists were when we visited. We visited often because we weren t able to see him in the nursing home before. On 5/19, the doctors had disconnected him from the ventilator and they had started walking him around. On 5/26, they said his trach tube was removed and he was doing good. On 6/9, he was brought home and is being provided with home care.

This was amazing progress, especially after he was in the nursing home for 2 months with no progress. Wish we could have brought him here sooner. The social worker, Alisa, was great in helping us bring my grandpa home, as well as providing us with equipment and home care while he gets stronger.

Again, thank you to everyone at Columbus hospital!
