The United States Army War College (USAWC) is a US Army educational institution in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, on Carlisle's historic 500-acre (2 km2) campus. It provides graduate-level instructions to senior military and civilian officers to prepare them for the tasks and responsibilities of the senior leadership. Each year, a number of the army with the rank of colonel and colonels with the rank of lieutenant are considered by an admission board. About 800 students attend at any time, half of them in a two-year distance learning program, and the other half on campus, a ten-month full-time residency program. Upon completion, the college awards its graduates a master s degree in strategic studies.
