My boyfriend and I had a goal to visit every animal shelter in the city on one very rainy Saturday morning. It went from this is fun to I could not stop crying. It's really sad to see so many animals in need of a home. Anyone looking to do what I did start in the 100's and go down because the other way around it goes all downhill as far as the condition of the animals. Given the local going downhill suddenly seems like an oxymoron.
When I got to Bidawee I really got the sense of them wanting to place an animal in a good home. I say this because Animal Haven gave me the impression that, I'm in a cool neighborhood, I'm rude because of it, by the way so many other people put in adoption papers for this dog, waste your time filling out our paperwork and by the way we update our website once a year so the dogs you see on our website may or may not even exist! Let me not sound completely bitter about Animal Haven because they did approve us for a dog. Because they were rude we continued looking.
Needless to say I adopted a Chihuahua Mix from Bidawee on December 29th and I cannot wait to adopt another dog from them hopefully towards the end of 2014. The adoption process was seamless and I really felt at home. They do check your references (you may want to let people know you are putting them down as a reference ASAP because they call right away), everyone in your household must be there when you attempt to adopt (don't go there if little Suzie has swimming practice because even little Suzie must be present), they give you a free vet visit and they have a one on one dog trainer if you feel you need a little help. Oh, they also update their website right away :) which helps if you are online looking for a specific dog. It's very far east. I mean right off of the FDR to be exact. I liked the atmosphere so much that I am continuing to take my dog there for his vet visits even though I live on the Upper West Side.
