Visiting Bolton Castle is like stepping back through History. Having seen the castle featured in Countryfile a group of us were inspired to go and visit and we were not disappointed.

Bolton must be one of the very best preserved and kept castles of its type. Within, the Mediaeval world is effortlessly brought to life with period tapestries, furnishings, suits of armour, and all the things one might hope to find in such a place!

Most interesting was the castle's particular history - it was once host to an imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots - which was neatly articulated during the tour. If you prefer to just roam around there's an easy to follow guide.

There's also falconry and archery and the view over Yorks is extraordinary.

All in all, highly recommended.
