My family and I stayed at the Marriott Birmingham ...

My family and I stayed at the Marriott Birmingham on 3590 Grandview Parkway last weekend (Jan. 19). We were having a small impromptu birthday gathering for cake and coffee in my mother-in-law's honor. In the middle of our meal/cake & coffee, a very drunk man who had stumbled in the side doors of the hotel began SHOUTING OBSCENITIES and beating on the men's bathroom door. This immediately alarmed everyone in our party, namely, my seven year old son. After a few minutes, the man stumbled out of the men's room with HIS PANTS UNDONE clearly struggling to pull them up and button them. At this point, my brother-in-law quickly walked over to alert hotel staff who were nonchalantly typing away behind the desk. The staff told him they would contact police. A few seconds later, the man stumbles over and begins to stand near my son and father-in-law while telling everyone that "people in the TVs (in the lobby) are watching us". The man was clearly out-of-his-mind drunk or high. He was very hostile and combative with my husband and brother-in-law as they tried to divert his attention and get him away from our party. The man would laugh maniacally one second and scream and shout the next. My husband and brother-in-law quickly tried to get the man away from our table and our son, so that my son and I could leave the lobby. When my son and I locked ourselves inside the hotel room, he pitifully told me things like, "Maybe we should keep our shoes on incase we have to run away." and "What will we do if that man finds us?" just to name a few. As a parent, that was heart-breaking.
My sister-in-law videoed the ordeal while hotel staff never even bothered to check in with my husband and brother-in-law while they tried to talk the man down and occupy him while police arrived.
What was the hotel staff doing???? They DID NOTHING TO STOP THIS MAN OR EVEN TO INTERVENE. What about patron SAFETY?? This was a situation that could have quickly escalated.
Later, when we asked if the man was a patron of the hotel, the staff replied that he was dropped off and stumbled in the side doors. We also asked what happened to the hotel security that had been wandering around the lobby earlier. The staff replied that there was/is an hour delay between shift changes. WHAT??? That is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE. When the security guard finally meandered in AFTER police arrived, she NEVER went over to check on the situation. She NEVER acted alarmed NOR concerned. She walked over to the hotel staff and chatted with them - some security guard!!
This was a pathetic display of hotel staff and shows the concern they have for hotel patrons. No apologies nor responsibility by the hotel staff were issued. My son is still shaken from that incident. Marriott needs to put key passes on the EXTERIOR of the building as most city hotels now have.
ONE STAR for LAZY HOTEL STAFF.

**IN RESPONSE TO HOTEL'S STATEMENT - 02/03: No, there were NO MEASURES taken while waiting for police by hotel staff. A member of our party took VIDEO of the entire ordeal. You can clearly see NO ONE but members of our party speaking to him. The police watched OUR video and spoke to US about the ordeal - not staff. You know why? Because the staff stayed BEHIND THE DESK DOING NOTHING.
Besides, where you there? NO, you weren't. Of course the Marriott staff is going to LIE and say they reacted properly.
