Aleppo Citadel is a fortified medieval castle. Aleppo Citadel is considered one of the oldest and largest castles in the world. The use of the hill on which the castle is located dates back to the third millennium BC, where it was later occupied by many civilizations including the Greeks, Byzantines, Mamluks, and Ayyubids, while it appears that most of the current construction dates back to the Ayyubid period. The Aga Khan Foundation for Culture and the Archaeological Society in Aleppo carried out extensive conservation operations in 2000. The castle is located in the center of the Old City [1], which was included by UNESCO on the list of World Heritage Sites in 1986.
